Introducing GRM Tools Atelier
Tuesday October 14, 2025. 06:00 PM , from Gearslutz
![]() A pioneering institution established in 1958 by Pierre Schaeffer and dedicated to research and promotion of experimental electroacoustic music, INA GRM (Groupe de Recherches Musicales de l’Institut National de l’Audiovisuel) has authored digital audio effects for more than 30 years. Its acclaimed plug-in suite GRM Tools 3 is widely used around the world, from Hollywood recording studios to avant-garde contemporary music, and is considered a staple. While Atelier continues the lineage of its ancestors, it starts with a clean slate. Atelier is a groundbreaking instrument for sound exploration and sound design. It comes at launch with eight simple but powerful modules for sound generation and processing (pitch-shifting delays, multi-playhead sampler, advanced comb filter bank…) and freely chainable into complex patches. Comparable in scope and complexity to boutique modular synthesizers modules, they encourage an exploratory approach to music making and reward creative misuse and serendipity. Modules are the building blocks to process any sound in an original way and to shape generators and effects into living synths. But what really brings your patches to life is its completely novel polyadic modulation engine. It is simple — just drag a wire from a modulator to any parameter — but much more powerful than its analog counterpart: a single source produces an infinite variety of independent modulations when connected to several destinations. At launch, three types of modulators are included, giving you a wide palette of random, controlled or programmable sources. Atelier’s modulation engine is full of surprises, challenging you to think outside of your common routines. Atelier features unbounded multichannel processing. Where most creative audio tools today only work in mono or stereo, leaving spatial thinking to the mixing stage, Atelier brings multichannel processing to the composition stage: it is fully agnostic to the number of channels used. GRM Tools Atelier is greater than the sum of its parts. Its environment is cohesive and its interface polished and friendly, showing insights that let you know what is going on under the hood. It invites you to play the software like an instrument. We believe that it will be a great addition to the toolboxes of sound designers, musicians and tinkerers alike. A fun way to create unheard-of sounds and break with your expectations. GRM Tools Atelier is available for download at https://grm.tools It can be used as a plug-in (VST3, AudioUnit and AAX) as well as standalone. It retails for 249 euros with an introductory price of 199 euros within the first month. While the initial release is macOS only, we are already working on a Windows port that will be available early 2026. Attached Thumbnails
