OSPRAY-8 Analogue Percussion Synthesizer
Saturday July 5, 2025. 04:16 PM , from Gearslutz
![]() Just want to introduce myself, and my little percussion Synth, the OSPRAY-8 I'm Paul, and have spent the last 14 years or so making Nixie Clocks at my company Bad Dog Designs. However they are no longer a viable business anymore, so I turned to my other passion - electronic Music, and came up with OSPRAY-8! It's a totally old school analogue percussion synth, based on 1980's designs and comprises of 3 modules, a Drum module that will do Kicks / snares / Toms / rimshots etc. A Cymbal module that will do Open and Closed Hi Hats / Cowbells / Gongs / white noise and also a Handclap module that will go from the quickest finger click to a deep and cavernous hand clap. The OSPRAY-8 consists of 4 drum modules, 3 Cymbal modules and a handclap module, which gives a good range of sounds. To trigger the modules, there's an individual trigger input for each module that will take a 3-12v positive signal ( Beatstep Pro for example ) A manual trigger button to allow you to create a new sound without having to hook it up to a sequencer, and also midi control. What does it sound like? Well - authentic analogue sounds from 1970's and 80's. I've only got a couple of demos so far: This is just some of the modules and rather abstract.. This is a bit more recognisable.. Here I've tried to emulate the percussion from 'I feel Love' I'm not a million miles off, but needs a little more tweaking! All the sounds are straight out the side of the unit, no EQ or post processing. I guess the nearest I could compare the OSPRAY - 8 to would be a Vermona DRM1, but it's a different sound palette, sits on your desk and I would argue ( of course! ) more tweakable in terms of noises it produces. It's my plan to either make and sell them directly, or to put them on Reverb or to do a Kickstarter. I would welcome your thoughts and comments! Cheers, Paul
