Imaging and placement

Hi Rich,

Thank you for being so generous with your knowledge. You’re work has been a constant influence on me and my own career for a good twenty years, and so many times I look at the credits of records I am moved by and your name is there. Thank you for for the inspiration you have provided, and still do!

Something I admire about your work is the imaging you are able to create. Your mixes sound like ‘records’ and the imaging choices really extend the arrangements of the songs, which make them very compelling. I hear a similar feature in a lot of Andy Wallace and Alan Moulders mixes, and I find it a very elusive thing to create in my own work.

Examples would be Renegades Of Funk, all of Absolution, Seventeen Going Under, Inspire (Cave In).

How much of that is a conscious choice, or is that driven from instinct? And do you have any tips or insight to developing that skill?
