Looking to upgrade headphones from ATH-M50x
Wednesday November 13, 2024. 10:10 AM , from Gearslutz
I make electronic music, bass heavy, also ambient, idm, etc. I just want to preface everything by saying I've made my best mixes on my audio technica ath-m50x. Maybe this is because I used them for 10+ years, and have been very used to the soundstage. personally, im a fan of the hyped sound, it's very easy for me to make mixing decisions that give me direct responses.
Also, im a producer first and foremost, I don't mix for other people or anything like that. However, post-production and mixing have been great on the ATH-50x enough to put out my own music and have it sound good enough. I already tried to upgrade my headphones twice, and I didn't have good results. First I got the sennhiser hd660s, and I realized quite fast that it was extremely veiled (to me) and lacked air. After researching a bit, I figured out that the sennhiser 650 seemed to be a better option (and perhaps even the 600). I got the 650, and it was an improvement from the 660s. Although, even after using them for a year, I still feel the same way about them as before: veiled, kind of a weird stereo soundstage, and some very vague frequencies too me. I can't quite put my finger on the exact areas of vagueness, but issues have come up with all sorts of aspects with me producing/mixing with them. That being said, I think im moving on from sennhisers entirely. I heard great things about the 800s, but I feel like their sound isn't for me. could it be that I just don't like open-back headphones? I would like to continue to explore upgrading from the audio technicas. I think they're better on my ears in the long run as well. I guess something that makes closer sense to the ath-m50x sound but upgraded. My budget is around $1k. I don't need to spend that much, but if its worth it I would:)
