Binary diffuser question

Hi guys, recently I was thinking to add some diffusion in my studio with some binary diffusers. The easiest diy project is putting slats over my bass trap (I have a project from Music City Acoustics) and I was wondering if this tipe of panels works also if not mounted over absorbers but straight to the wall. I didn't heard about this so I am asking here if someone have done this or knows if this could work.
