What outboard gear can cover more ground than the Rupert Neve MBT?
Saturday November 9, 2024. 04:24 PM , from Gearslutz
So I had the chance to hear a Master Bus Transformer by Rupert Neve and its 4k USD. I must say a few things. I was on a quest to gain separation and depth and glue in my mixes with being IN THE BOX.
My first stop was summing. I tried out a Rupert Neve 5057 Orbit which was nice. It has Silk Red and Blue in which you cant use both at the same time, but its subtle and adds separation and light saturation in a seemingly unnoticeable but noticeable way to your mix, but overall the theme was "Subtle". Side note --- The Silk Red and Blue seem sonically DIFFERENT in the 5057 as opposed to the MBT I felt myself wanting to cover more ground with my mixes. This lead me to the MBT. If anyone has ever gotten there hands on one of these... It definitely cover ground to say the least. The WIDTH section was partially the ground i was looking to cover in terms of what i wanted with summing, but the truth is IMO you gain much more separation of elements with the MBT than with what summing can provide, with that being said, there is just some MOJO that is missing when not summing. I know the answer is... "BUY BOTH" but I'm not anywhere near rich lol. To make a long story short, the MBT is for somebody look to take there mix to a NEW LEVEL, while the summing is for somebody simply looking to gain additional separation with the gear and setup they already have, and a mix they are already happy with. With this being said i started wondering if there is any piece better at this than the MBT. My main concern is UBER separation in my mixes by tasteful but generous width and separation on elements in my speakers. If I could only have the Silk and Width section of the MT i would be a happy camper at a lower price point what piece of gear do you think will do this for me? Single handedly bring a mix from ---- Honda Accord to Ferrari in one peace as good or better than the MBT.
