DAW-free Home Studio (Please share your opinions)
Thursday November 7, 2024. 03:08 PM , from Gearslutz
Hi all, I’d like to solicit some opinions here if you’d be kind enough to oblige…
After a number of years running a Logic based home studio (current system is based around an iMac Pro with an Apogee Ensemble Thunderbolt); & with a few products on the market that now make it feasible, I’ve decided that it’s finally time to move back to a DAW-free setup. This part I have decided on, I simply despise tracking in front of a computer & I believe that my productivity has suffered from having to work in this way (it just feels like a chore compared to the old days & there’s simply no joy in it for me). So; with that in mind, I believe that I’ve narrowed it down to two different solutions that would come out pretty much the same cost-wise & this is where I’d like to hear some opinions. Option 1: Tascam Model 2400 with a Neve channel strip to use for vocals (instruments would be mainly line in from modellers, IR loaders, electronic drum kits etc; therefore, inbuilt preamps aren’t a concern for anything other than vocals really). Option 2: Tascam Sonicview with IF-MTR32 multitrack recorder expansion card. There is also the wildcard of pairing a Tascam Studio Bridge with a separate analog console; however, I believe that a decent standalone analog console would probably make this route a lot more expensive (I can’t imagine that a mid-tier live mixer offered by the likes of Mackie would achieve acceptable/comparable results to the other two options). To my mind, the advantage of ‘Option 1’ is that I can pickup the Model 2400 first, experiment & make sure I’m happy with it before purchasing the Neve channel strip & then could continue to expand with outboard gear from there at a later date. The benefit of ‘Option 2’ is that I’d likely be able to achieve better results from the get-go all with just the one product (better preamps & FAR more flexible FX routing options etc) & not have to worry about adding additional pieces of gear. Either way, the end-goal is to have a DAW-free tracking solution out of the box & then; ideally, end up completely DAW-less for mixing as well (heck, if I could get away with mastering away from the DAW I’d be up for that too to be honest). So; yeh, you’re thoughts on which of the above options you think would be the most sensible way to go would be very much appreciated &/or if you have any other solutions like a decent cost-effective analogue console (if such a thing exists) that could be paired with the Studio Bridge then I would be all ears. Thanks in advance for anyone who takes the time to post here.:-)
