Is it possible to have a MIDI jam band with a software based drum machine controller like MPC/Push ?

Wednesday November 6, 2024. 02:13 PM , from Gearslutz
I want a studio that is set up like a band jam room. But with the option of the drummer being on a MIDI drum kit (Roland TD3) or an akai MPC or Abelton Push or equivalent sequencer controller.

Many production duos from the 90's onwards had a drum machine guy and a keyboard/instruments guy. I want to recreate this but have the instruments be computer based.

A MIDI band with a software based MPC type sequencer, so someone can be the drum machine player/programmer. A couple of MIDI keyboards and a MIDI drum kit as an alternative to the MPC/Push.

Instead of a solo person MIDI sequencing at a desk with the screen and speakers and MIDI keyboard. I would rather have a layout where a handful of musicians are all facing each other.

Is there a software sequencer controller that could be operated as an independent hardware controller like the akai MPC or Ableton push. But using the DAW software? Thus functioning as an independent musician on the drum machine but using software that the MIDI keyboards are also triggering software instruments in. Plus audio for bass guitar, electric guitar, vocals horns etc.

I suspect the new computer based akai MPC software DAW or using the MPC software as a plug in within a DAW and setting the MPC One or Live 2 or X as a controller might be able to be a drummer in a band.

I've got a bunch of YouTube videos queued up on using the Akai MPC's as controllers for the MPC computer based software. I may find the answer there. But I felt the need to survey the musicians of gearspace to see what technology allows for a more human band scenario utilising an independent MPC/Push style controller for drums.

Did I explain my question clearly. Easy to understand?

It seems really bizarre that most MIDI studios have the solo desk type set up. Why not have a MIDI band and interact/create with each other musically and socially.
