Drawmer: Does 1971 = 1974 + 1976 ?
Monday November 4, 2024. 08:31 AM , from Gearslutz
Hi! Has anyone used the Drawmer 1971?
Apparently it's an EQ combined with a per-band saturator. And maybe it's also a bit of a dynamic EQ, because they say the saturator also compresses, maybe. It's hard to say, since all that fun sits behind one single "crush" button I was considering getting the 1974, which is 'only' an EQ, and it would seem the 1971 is more or less the same EQ, judging from the interface. (Is it?) So I'm wondering about its saturation feature: How does it sound? Is it akin to their 1976 3-band saturator's? I'm asking this because I own a 1976, and while it sounds fine, I kinda hate its interface, and I especially hate the forced MS operation. So, if the 1971 sounds even a bit like the 1976 (that is, a saturation that is often mellow, and always a bit soft), getting a 1971 instead of a 1974 would make sense, because I could get rid of the 1976 in the process. Sure, the 1976's controls are more extensive than the 1971's simple on/off button, but since the interface is the part I like least in the 1976, I may not miss it much. I also have a pair of Carnaby 500, which are also saturator EQs, and wonder whether the 1971 could replace them as well. The question is: can you saturate a band while applying negative gain to it, in order to effectively move its frequency content upwards? So, in short, two questions: 1. As an EQ, is the 1971 like the 1974? 2. As a saturator, is it more like the 1976? The 1977? The Carnaby 500?... or something else?
