Neve or API Buss Summing Advantages?
Wednesday October 30, 2024. 02:33 PM , from Gearslutz
It seems that one of the big deals about using LUNA, at least from all of the YT videos I've watched (or is it just to sell it?), is Neve (or API) Buss summing. I even see where people are sending a single track, like a bass track, to a buss, just so they can run it through that summing plugin (I assume.) Because otherwise, I don't see any advantage to running a bass track to a buss instead of straight to the master. I record with as few plugins or unnecessary routings as possible to try to get the cleanest signal possible and don't use busses at all.
I currently use Reaper, but none of the plugins that come with it, only the better-sounding, most transparent ones to my ears (UA, FabFilter etc... ) on my system. Reaper works great, with low CPU usage, but for some reason always seems to bloat the sound a bit with a lower-mid emphasis, and flattens the dimensionality IMO. I've never been happy with the result and have to compensate with a master eq to try to correct the flaws, but It's still not what I want to hear. I also don't like that it has about 60% more features then I will ever use, and has a terrible system for removing unwanted tracks from a project. LUNA seems like it was made for the way I record, just like I did back in the 70's and on. Now, I realize I could just add the Studer tape emulations and API channel strip plugins to set Reaper up similar to LUNA, but not NEVE summing since it is proprietary to LUNA. So what is it that Neve summing brings to the game that makes it so desirable? And how/why is it different than the summing that goes on in Reaper or other DAW's, other than it is an emulation of the summing from a Neve console? Again, is it just a marketing ploy? I am downloading the LUNA demo this weekend to see if it bloats or loses dimensionality like Reaper and to test it's ergonomics. I just hope it has all of the editing tools I need, because I punch-in vocal and lead guitar tracks like crazy, and don't use compressors on vocals, rather use volume automation to adjust each and every word, among other things. Thanks in advance for your comments and help. Scrench
