British Grove Studios: Touring Mark Knopfler’s Sonic Sanctuary
On a recent excursion across the pond, Sweetwater got the chance to visit the legendary British Grove Studios in the Chiswick district of London, England. The studio was commissioned by Dire Straits’ Mark Knopfler to be “a monument to past and future technology,” as described by Knopfler in a 2005 interview with Mix Online shortly before the space would open. Its dyad of studios comprise rooms dedicated to classic and contemporary gear, respectively, including a custom-built Neve 88R mixing console alongside a slew of vintage equipment, the likes of which helped bring many of rock music’s most iconic cultural artifacts to life. Step into the sound!
