BOSS CEB-3 Bass Chorus Pedal

The shimmering sound of the ’80s

Whether you’re doing your best Sting impression, starting a moody post-punk band, or simply loving the sounds of the ’80s, no bass board is complete without a chorus pedal. The BOSS CEB-3 Bass Chorus pedal traces its lineage back to the world’s first chorus box, but it comes with a few extra features to pair better with the bass. Level, rate, and depth will be familiar to any musician who uses a chorus box, but the CEB-3’s low-filter knob is a unique, bass-specific addition that sharpens your sound and eliminates any unwanted mud. Lastly, the CEB-3 comes loaded with stereo outputs — a natural choice for any chorus box — that allow you to send your dry signal to one amp and your modulated signal to another, thus resulting in a lush, 3D tone that only a chorus can provide.

Aguilar Grape Phaser V2 Bass Effects Pedal

An updated iteration of Aguilar’s funky phaser

Swoosh and sway with the wild modulation tones of the Aguilar Grape Phaser V2 bass effects pedal! Phase has long been a standard-issue bass effect for its ability to impart a touch of movement and excitement to even the most routine of root-note rhythms, but there’s an issue lurking under the surface — by their very nature, phase effects tend to diminish your instrument’s low end. Thankfully, Aguilar designed the Grape Phaser V2 with innovative 4-stage circuitry to perfectly preserve your instrument’s lowest lows — even on extreme jet-engine takeoff settings. A 2-knob control scheme keeps everything nice and simple, with a unique color knob that feeds your signal back through the phase circuit for a warm, funky feel. And fear not: though the Grape Phaser V2 may feature updated graphics and dramatically reduced weight, it’s sonically identical to the now-classic Grape Phaser pedal under the hood.

Octave & Pitch Pedals

BOSS OC-5 Polyphonic Guitar/Bass Octave Pedal

Two classic BOSS octave tones in one box

As a do-it-all octave pedal equally fit for both guitarists and bassists, the BOSS OC-5 polyphonic guitar/bass octave pedal offers superior tracking in two different settings. In addition, the OC-5 also features a polyphonic mode that perfectly tracks throughout the bass’s entire register — ideal for thunderous sub-bass sounds and guitar-like melodic/chord work. Finally, a dedicated dry direct output allows you to explore the OC-5’s wild octave potential to the maximum while keeping the band in check with your uncolored bass tone. It may not be a dedicated bass pedal, but the OC-5’s one-two punch of two classic BOSS octave pedal designs makes this one of the best guitar pedals for bass available today.

DOD Meatbox Sub Synth Pedal

Ground-shaking sub-bass might

Sure, the bass goes low, but what if you need to go lower? Enter the ground-shaking, subharmonic rumble of the DOD Meatbox Sub Synth pedal, an enhanced re-creation of one of DOD’s most (in)famous ’90s creations. An octave knob and low-frequency tone control make for a formidable array of ultra-low tones. But the show’s real star is the synthesized subharmonic effect found on the sub knob. This setting descends into such a deep tone that you’ll likely feel its rumble in your bones. You can also split your signal into independent wet/dry tones with a TRS cable to maximize your low-end potential with a dual-amp wall of sound!

What’s more, each signal path sports its own unique EQ control, with a multipole lowpass filter on the wet side and a full-spectrum tilt EQ on the clean side to sculpt your sound. Origin Effects Cali76 Compact Bass Compressor Pedal

Studio-grade compression in a stompbox

Bass Guitar Pedal Buying Guide

When you think of a bass guitar, you might not think about pedals. Who has the desire to carry around a big pedalboard as guitarists do? While it may be true that pedals are not as synonymous with bass guitars as they are with electric guitars, they are still crucial for giving you more tonal possibilities or improving your tone. But where and how do you begin to look for bass pedals? Fortunately, Sweetwater has a wide selection of bass pedals from the top brands. So, before you dive headfirst into buying bass pedals, let’s cover the basics.

This Sweetwater buying guide takes a pedalboard-style approach to your signal path, providing you with essential insights into the ever-growing world of bass guitar effects. What Is the Best Signal Flow?

If you have never bought a bass pedal or are new to pedals, then you might be perplexed by the sheer number of pedals offered today. An important thing to understand about pedals and their signal paths is that any pedal or effect you stick into the signal path will affect everything after it.

Another thing to mention is that the order of your pedals matters (but also doesn’t). On the one hand, pedal order is subjective, and you can arrange the order of your pedals however you want. On the other hand, the order does matter because what you place after an effect will affect how it sounds. A good rule of thumb for bassists starting out with pedals is to follow this order: bass to frequency to gain stage to modulation to amp.

Frequency Effects

Frequency effects cover a wide range of different pedal types. But at Sweetwater, we consider filter, equalizer, wah-wah, pitch-shifter, and harmony pedals to be frequency effects.

EQ Pedals

Some people rely on the EQ section of their amp to sculpt their tone, but an EQ pedal might do the trick for those wanting a little more flexibility in fine-tuning specific frequencies. Most bass guitar equalizer pedals are graphic EQs with five to 10 frequency bands. These are easy to dial in on the fly if you need to make quick adjustments to suit a particular venue. If you want a pedal interface that looks more like the EQ section of an amp, then you’ll want to check out a parametric EQ, which is great for punching in creative tone shifts and fixing frequency imbalances.

Wah & Filter Pedals

Nothing screams funk bass more than the classic wah pedal, which lets you manually sweep through the frequency spectrum with a resonant peaking filter by rocking your foot. While operating wah pedals is pretty simple, they differ considerably based on what manufacturer makes them, their circuitry, and their control mechanism (potentiometer vs. optical sensor).

If you like the sound of a wah pedal but don’t like the constant hassle of moving your foot up and down, then you may want to try an autowah pedal (also called an envelope filter). The autowah was originally intended to produce the same funky sounds you can get from a wah-wah pedal; however, the faster automatic frequency sweep response these pedals provided opened up a new range of effects. All in all, no two autowahs or envelope filter pedals are the same, which makes finding the right one for you that much more fun.

Pitch-shifter & Harmony Pedals

Pitch shifters and harmony pedals are available in a variety of designs, such as the traditional octave-up or octave-down bass emulation models and polyphonic harmony pedals that allow you to specify whole chords. These pedals are all individual beasts, each with controls solely based on their intended use. Pitch shifters and harmony processors are fun to use if you like to make original sounds, and they also spark some creativity and allow you to think outside the box with your tone.

Gain Stage

The gain stage covers a wide array of different types of effects and can range from pedals as mild as bass preamps to insane bass fuzz effects. For bass guitar, the gain staging pedals include preamp, overdrive, distortion, and fuzz pedals.

Preamp Pedals

A workhorse and necessity for many bassists, the preamp pedal allows you to control the tone and output with a tap of a switch. Preamp pedals give you an EQ section to shape your tone, an output section to control the signal’s volume, and a DI output for connecting to a live console or recording interface. Some preamp pedals come with a switchable overdrive or distortion section, so you get two pedals in one!

Overdrive Pedals

And speaking of overdrive, that’ll be the next type of pedal you’ll typically find after a preamp pedal. For bass, overdrive pedals give your signal a little crunch and nice harmonic quality while retaining the note clarity. Overdrives are great for adding a little grit to your tone or standing out in a mix or band setting.

Distortion & Fuzz Pedals

If you’re looking for a huge, dirty tone, then you may want to look into bass distortion pedals. Bass distortion pedals come in a wide range of styles but serve the purpose of adding grit and character to your tone. You’ll sometimes get a fuzz effect when distortion pedals are pushed to the extreme by maxing out the distortion knob. This gives your tone a compressed yet huge sound that really makes your bass stand out among the rest of the band.

Modulation Effects

Chorus & Flanger Pedals

If you thought chorus and flanger pedals were just for guitars, then you were wrong. Those bright sounds and swooshing soundscapes pair well with bass guitars, too. Many genres are synonymous with modulated bass guitar, such as pop, New Wave, and post-punk. But what is the difference between chorus and flanger effects?

Although chorus and flanger effects are similar — so much so that many companies offer both effects in one pedal — they produce different sounds. The most noticeable difference between the two is that flanging produces a distinct rise-and-fall sound, whereas chorus produces a more spacious shimmer with a noticeable delay.

You may ask where flanging came from or how flanging even became a thing. Flanger pedals emulate an old studio trick involving desynchronizing two tape reels. Since pedals can’t fit two tape reels into their enclosures, a flanger pedal re-creates that studio trick by different means. Flanger pedals produce a movable comb filter (a series of frequency dips and peaks) by doubling the incoming signal, delaying the doubled signal slightly (no more than a few milliseconds), modulating the delay, and feeding a small amount of the delayed signal back into the effect. Typical flanger controls include the modulation rate and depth as well as the amount of feedback.

The chorus effect was a happy mistake when engineers tried to emulate flanging and instead produced a slightly different sound. Chorus involves modulating a delayed signal just like a flanger — only, there’s considerably more delay and no (or very little) feedback. Chorus pedals tend to have broader depth and rate controls. Additional controls include pre-delay for further offsetting the delayed signal and a tone knob for cutting down the brightness.

Phaser Pedals

The phaser effect is produced by having several frequency notches and peaks sweep across the frequency spectrum at regular intervals using a phase cancellation technique. The phase-shifted signals are modulated by an LFO, resulting in a steady sweep that is somewhat more subdued than flanging. While traditional phasers frequently just have one rate control, some contemporary phasers also include a depth control that allows you to enhance the resonance in the filtering to create a much more pronounced effect.
