UA Apollo x16 Now Supports Immersive Audio

Tuesday March 21, 2023. 08:00 PM , from Sweetwater inSync
Dolby Atmos, Apple Spatial Audio, Ambisonics, Sony 360 Reality Audio, and other immersive audio formats are quickly becoming the norm for studio professionals. So much so that our very own Sweetwater Studios contains the region’s best-equipped, certified Dolby Atmos mix rooms: our Studio B and Studio C.

Is Dolby Atmos the Future of Mixing? Sweetwater Believes So

The proliferation of immersive audio hasn’t been lost on Universal Audio, and with their upcoming UAD update, the company’s Apollo x16 Heritage Edition 18 x 20 Thunderbolt 3 audio interface with UAD DSP will offer support for multichannel formats up to 9.1.6, including Dolby Atmos, Auro‑3D, Sony 360 Reality Audio, and more. With this update, Apollo x16 users will have access to all-new monitor, calibration, and metering windows in the UAD Console application, enabling them to mix and monitor in a wide range of immersive and multichannel surround formats.

This is a free update for all Apollo owners. Apollo x16 users will be the only customers to benefit from full immersive audio support, but all Apollo owners will be able to access the new output meter window.

UAD Frequently Asked Questions:

#1: What is the most important benefit of this update for Apollo x16 customers?

Customers looking to expand into immersive audio mixing now have a cost-effective monitoring solution with Apollo x16.

#2: How is Apollo x16 different from other products that support Dolby Atmos and immersive monitor modes?

Since you can easily chain Thunderbolt Apollo interfaces together, customers can pair an Apollo x16 with a Twin or x4 for desktop control of monitor levels while simultaneously feeding binaural mixdowns to headphones.

#3: Why is UAD only offering Dolby Atmos support for Apollo x16?

Apollo x16 is the only UA interface with enough analog outputs to support 9.1.6 monitoring.

#4: Why can’t I use Dolby Atmos surround modes on my Apollo x8?

Apollo x8 doesn’t have enough analog outputs to support most Dolby Atmos surround modes. Even if you used optical digital outputs along with the analog outputs, the outputs would not be time- or phase-aligned.

#5: What does this mean for current Apollo owners?

This is a free update for all Apollo owners. While Dolby Atmos monitoring modes will only be available to Apollo x16 owners, the new output meter window will be available for all Apollos.
