What exactly is a linear phase multi-band compressor?

I was scrolling on waves website when I saw they had a linear phase multi-band compressor up and I was curious as to what it actually does. I know eq can cause phasing issues but I never heard compression could have those issues. So what does it actually do and why is it needed? And should I perhaps start to use it in my mastering? Thanks.
