9 Amazing Mics Released in 2019

Wednesday May 1, 2019. 02:00 PM , from Sweetwater inSync
We’re just five months in, and 2019 already looks like it’s going to be a banner year for microphones. Sweetwater has selected a few standout mics that have been released thus far, and the common theme among them seems to be “innovation.” So settle in and check out these amazing mics.

Apogee HypeMic
When the first USB mics appeared, they were considered little more than toys by many recording professionals. Savvy engineers and musicians at Sweetwater took a more wait-and-see attitude; their patience borne out by the latest generation ADC (analog-to-digital converter) technology built into today’s USB microphones, which brings us directly to the Apogee HypeMiC. Perfect for podcasters and home recordists alike, HypeMiC is a cardioid condenser that captures voices and instruments with amazingly high quality, while its 24-bit/96kHz PureDIGITAL connection provides clean, convenient routing into your recording software via USB. Built-in studio-grade compression ensures that lead vocals and solos sit proudly in the mix, while the handy Blend feature and headphone output provide low-latency monitoring. The HypeMiC is about as user-friendly as it gets — simply plug it in and you’re ready to record with your favorite DAW. The HypeMiC is compatible with Mac, Windows, and iOS, and it even ships with a mini desk tripod, pop filter, and carrying case.

Earthworks SR314
Headlined as “the instrument for vocalists,” the Earthworks SR314 was engineered for today’s live performance environment. Offering a sculpted, brushed aluminum retro look and a new approach to miking live vocals, this handheld condenser’s tight cardioid polar pattern provides consistent frequency response up to 90˚ off-axis, with extreme attenuation of off-axis sound sources beyond 90 degrees and maximum rejection at 180˚. Thus, the SR314 is forgiving of singers who tend to “wag” the mic, while doing an excellent job of rejecting stage spill. The SR314 captures natural, open-sounding vocals with minimal proximity effect, maintaining low-end articulation up close and remaining full sounding at a distance. This lets vocalists “work the mic” without drastic changes in sound. The SR314’s 145dB SPL handling and extended 20Hz–30kHz frequency response further increase the versatility of the SR314, making it as useful for miking instruments as it is for vocals.

RODE PodMic
Designed for podcasting and voice-over work, the RODE PodMic captures everything from the quietest whispers to heated shouting matches, delivering a smooth, balanced sound that will professionalize your presentations. Boasting attractive, rugged all-metal construction, PodMic features an end-address dynamic capsule protected by a stainless steel mesh grille with an integrated pop filter for plosive-free performances. PodMic’s durable yolk mount makes it easy to attach it to a boom arm for added convenience and placement flexibility. You can use the PodMic with any preamp or audio interface, but it really shines when you combine it with the RODE RODECaster Pro podcast production console. Simply choose PodMic on the RODECaster’s touchscreen, and the console will automatically optimize the mic settings for the best possible sound.

Warm Audio WA-251 and WA-84
Looks like the folks at Warm Audio, who built their reputation on acclaimed rack gear and microphone designs based on revered classics, have two more hits on their hands. The WA-251 is a meticulous rendition of the legendary large-diaphragm tube condenser that was introduced in 1960 and is considered to be one of the most beautiful-sounding microphones ever made. Three polar patterns (cardioid, omni, and figure-8) give you immense flexibility when it comes to exploring the sonic possibilities offered by different recording techniques. The small-diaphragm WA-84 is designed after the European elder statesman of FET condenser mics. The originals saw heavy use at top studios in the ’70s and beyond, and like the ’251 can be heard on countless classic recordings. True to Warm Audio’s compelling value proposition, the WA-251 and WA-84 sell for a fraction of what the vintage originals would cost (if you find them in good working condition). If you want to capture sumptuous sound without blowing your studio budget, adding a WA-251 and a pair of WA-84s (in black or nickel) to your mic locker is a no-brainer.

Shure MV88+
Perfect for content creators, the Shure MV88+ captures sound clearly, whether you’re inches away from the source, doing an interview in a loud environment, or sketching out a new song with your acoustic guitar. Utilizing multiple capsules inside the mic, the MV88+ lets you select variable-width stereo, cardioid, figure-8, and raw mid-side stereo, among other options — all accessible from the free ShurePlus MOTIV iOS app, which gives you full access to the mic’s onboard DSP. From the app, you can dial in your gain structure, add compression and limiting, and shape the frequency response via a graphic EQ. The app is easy to use, with quick and intuitive editing, full 24-bit/48kHz digital resolution, and compatibility with Dropbox and other export options that streamline the back end of your creative process. Whether you’re a podcaster, vlogger, filmmaker, or musician, the Shure MV88+ takes iOS integration and audio quality to a whole new level.

sE Electronics V Beat and V Kick
sE Electronics has a new duo of compact dynamic mics designed to capture drums. Intended for snare and tom toms, the V Beat features impressive off-axis rejection to minimize spill from nearby drums and cymbals. Its ultra-compact design and parallel XLR connector/stand mount make for an extremely small footprint, while its rock-solid swivel mount lets you precisely position the mic — aiming it at any part of the drumhead to achieve your desired sound. One of the smallest — and most versatile — purpose-built bass drum mics we’ve seen, the V Kick is designed for kick drums, floor toms, tympani, or other large drums that generate plentiful low-frequency energy and high SPLs. The V Kick’s integrated swivel joint allows flexibility of placement, and its purpose-built capsule delivers a punchy sonic character that allows bass drums to sit perfectly and drive a track. Classic/Modern voicing switches for mid and high frequencies give you further sound-shaping options, from fat and traditional to scooped and aggressive.

Aston Microphones Stealth
Aston Microphones Stealth is an end-address large-chassis dynamic microphone with innovative features and a broad 20Hz–20kHz frequency response, making it suitable for a wide range of vocal and instrument sources in broadcast or recording studios and onstage. Developed with input from over 90 top engineers, producers, and artists, this ingenious mic features active and passive modes that engage automatically, depending on whether phantom power is present. In passive mode, Stealth performs as you would expect a high-quality dynamic mic to, offering impressive SPL handling and a rich, full sound. For capturing especially quiet sources, engage phantom power and the built-in Class A mic preamp drastically enhances the sensitivity and maximizes gain before feedback. Four different voicing settings let you tailor Stealth for male and female vocals, for electric and acoustic guitars, or to emulate the dark velvety sound of vintage ribbon mics. To prevent rumble from ruining a perfect take, the mic’s mass-loaded capsule is isolated from its chassis with three hemispheres made of high-tech Sorbothane®. Stealth ships with a quick-release stand mount, making it easier to swap mics and stands during a session.

There you have it. If the sonic quality and innovative features of these microphones are any indication, by the end of the year (or even before), you will probably be reading another inSync article highlighting our next batch of great mics. And as always, should you have questions about how best to populate your mic locker, feel free to call your friendly and knowledgeable Sweetwater Sales Engineer at (800) 222-4700. Happy recording!
