First Look: Gibson 2019

Monday April 29, 2019. 02:00 PM , from Sweetwater inSync
With a new CEO at the helm and lots of anticipation among players, 2019 promises to be a big year for Gibson fans. We got a sneak peek of Gibson’s latest guitars and basses, and we found plenty to be excited about. Whether you’re looking for a vintage-accurate re-creation or a forward-thinking modern instrument, the latest Gibson lineup has something for everyone.
Original Collection

With the Original Collection, Gibson aims to return to the Golden Era of Gibson guitars. All Original Collection guitars are equipped with hand-wired electronics, bumblebee capacitors, and CTS potentiometers for maximum sonic quality and tonal versatility. Classic designs include the familiar, such as ’50s and ’60s Les Pauls, Les Paul Juniors, and Les Paul Specials, and you’ll also find some historical gems like the SG Standard ’61 with Vibrola tailpiece. Original Collection instruments feature a chunkier neck profile compared to the Modern Collection, sure to please fans of vintage Gibson necks.

Modern Collection

Gibson’s Modern Collection is aimed at — you guessed it — modern players that still love the classic Gibson vibe and tone. Common to all Modern Collection instruments is a Graph Tech nut, featuring a proprietary formulation made specifically for Gibson. Graph Tech nuts exhibit even less friction than bone nuts, for supreme tuning stability when making big bends. Modern Collection instruments also feature Gibson’s SlimTaper neck profile, a slimmer shape that is optimized for faster, technical playing styles.

Custom Shop Collection

If you’re a lifelong Gibson fan, it’s likely that a Gibson Custom Shop guitar would be the Holy Grail of your collection. Since 2019 is the 60th anniversary of the ’59 Les Paul, the Custom Shop is celebrating with a wide range of ’59 Les Paul VOS instruments in gorgeous vintage-correct finishes.

Gibson Basses

Countless bass players have turned to Gibson’s range of short-scale basses for their massive low-end thump and richness. For 2019, Gibson is offering the Les Paul Junior Tribute Doublecut Bass and the SG Standard Bass, both with 30.5″ scale lengths. For players that prefer a standard scale length, the commanding Thunderbird Bass and Explorer Bass are available with a 34″ scale length.
