What do Fairlight CMI, Apogee, Clare Brothers, Lake Technology, Dolby, Lab.gruppen, JANDS, Apple, Elvis Presley, Bruce Springsteen and Barbara Streisand all have in common?
Bruce Jackson. Gary Jackson, Bruce's younger brother has put together an incredible book about Bruce's time as Elvis Presley's sound engineer during the 1970s. A story, life and career that really kicked off in 1070 after Bruce snuck into an Elvis concert in Sydney, Australia specifically to pepper Roy Clair of the Clair Brothers with technical questions regarding the PA system. Bruce's audacity and determination continued through his career. He worked for some of the biggest names in the industry, and was audio director for some of the planet's biggest spectacles like the Sydney Olympics in 2000, and the Vancouver Winter Olympics in 2010. He used dry ice to cool amplifiers on for Apple's mammoth U.S Festival in the early 1980's. He founded Apogee Digital. He created what went on to become the Dolby Lake Processor. He even had custom capsules made by Rode Microphones to fit into Barbara Streisand's wireless microphone for her live tours in the 1990s. There aren't many people who have had the career or impact on pro audio and live sound as Bruce Jackson has. He was killed tragically in 2011 when the plane he was piloting crashed. He was fittingly honoured and remembered with a service held at Sydney's Opera House. You can read more about the book here: BRUCE JACKSON ON THE ROAD WITH ELVIS - Home It is beautifully put together, and is filled with all kinds of incredibly interesting stories, photographs, letters, tour snaps, hand-drawn technical diagrams and quotes from a huge range artists and industry names. It really is a remarkable book about a remarkable man.
