I upgraded to the iPhone 17 Pro Max and solved every problem I had
Thursday October 2, 2025. 12:30 PM , from Macworld UK
![]() It’s no secret that the iPhone has matured, with dramatic innovations now arriving only every several years. The regular iPhone 17 adopting past Pro exclusives is a clear admission that we’re approaching the iPhone’s final form. As such, Pro users on an annual upgrade cycle often find little to be impressed by—and this year appears to be no different. While one could easily distinguish the iPhone 16 Pro Max from the 17 Pro Max visually, the actual upgrades this year are relatively limited. Beyond the overhauled chassis, casual users will likely notice the sharper telephoto and selfie cameras—and a few other obvious changes. Despite this, I decided to upgrade from last year’s flagship to the iPhone 17 Pro Max, and I don’t regret it one bit. A whole lot of megapixels Arguably, the iPhone 17 Pro Max’s most notable functional upgrade is its new camera capabilities. With this release, Apple boosted the telephoto lens from 12MP to a whopping 48MP, putting it on par with the wide and ultrawide rear lenses. This unlocks higher optical and digital zoom levels, letting users capture from afar—while still maintaining details and clarity. The iPhone 16 Pro Max supports 5x optical and up to 25x digital zooms. Meanwhile, the iPhone 17 Pro Max offers superior 4x and 8x optical zooms due to the higher-resolution sensor and bumps the maximum digital zoom limit to 40x. More importantly, it addresses the pixelation issue I’ve long complained about. Now, not only do I get a longer zoom range, but my iPhone also outputs significantly crisper photos. If the numbers don’t sound too exciting, you can head to the dedicated article, where I compare telephoto shots taken with my iPhone 16 Pro Max and 17 Pro Max. The iPhone 17 Pro Max’s camera system is a bigger upgrade than it seems.Foundry Another notable camera upgrade over the iPhone 16 Pro Max is the all-new front-facing lens. Not only has its pixel resolution been raised from 12MP to 18MP, but it has also gained new features that simplify taking selfies. While Instagram wants to normalize shooting in portrait orientation, I typically lean to landscape photos, as they show more of my surroundings. Thanks to its square sensor, the iPhone 17 Pro Max’s front camera now lets me take landscape shots while holding my phone vertically, and it’s super convenient. It also introduces Center Stage support, which keeps me in frame during video calls. That’s not to mention the handy Dual Capture perk that records videos using the front and rear cameras simultaneously. Speaking of photography, the iPhone 17 Pro Max remedies a major Camera Control button annoyance. Previously, the button was hard to find without looking at the iPhone’s frame, as it is flush with it and shares a similar feel. While it still doesn’t protrude, its edge is now more prominent, letting you quickly locate it by just touching around. Similarly, clicking the Camera Control button no longer requires as much pressure. This makes it easier to launch the assigned photo-taking app and shoot without necessarily shaking the phone or messing up the composition. Overall, iPhone 17 Pro Max finally refines the photography experience, with polished front and rear cameras, and next-gen features. Shields up The iPhone 17 Pro Max’s exterior design refresh is another reason my upgrade has been justifiable. While last year’s titanium body is more durable than the new aluminum, the latter metal feels smoother and is more resistant to fingerprints. It’s not just about the metal type, however. The new design brings more symmetry to the iPhone by adopting an equal number of microphone and speaker grill holes on both sides of the USB-C port. Likewise, the plateau adds more consistency to the rear side by stretching the camera bump horizontally across the whole back. The iPhone 17 Pro Max is much stronger thanks to a new frame a Ceramic Shield 2.Foundry Perhaps the best part of the redesign is the reduced use of glass on the back side. Previously, iPhones were essentially delicate glass sandwiches that a single drop could potentially shatter. Now, the non-metallic rear part is limited to a stronger Ceramic Shield rectangle covering the wireless charging spot. So, you’re less likely to crack a caseless iPhone’s back. Speaking of the Ceramic Shield, the screen itself is now protected by the second generation of the material, contributing to higher scratch resistance. The display has also increased the peak outdoor brightness from 2,000 to 3,000 nits, making on-screen content more legible on sunny days. The revamped build finally makes the iPhone 17 Pro Max less prone to cracks and more aesthetically pleasing, retiring the dated Pro look of the past six years. Inner beauty The iPhone 17 Pro Max’s design changes aren’t limited to what you can see. Apple has also rearranged its internal components and introduced new ones to extend its battery life and lessen overheating. The eSIM-only iPhone 17 Pro Max variant finally utilizes the physical SIM card’s space to stretch the battery. In fact, this model boasts the longest battery life ever on an iPhone. The phone also supports faster charging speeds, a welcome upgrade for anyone constantly on the move. Given that the iPhone 15 Pro and 16 Pro models suffered from overheating issues, the iPhone 17 Pro finally incorporates a vapor chamber. This significantly helps cool down the phone when running intensive tasks, as it dissipates the warmth across the body. While my iPhone 17 Pro Max can get a bit warm when using it in direct sunlight, the high temperature is no longer concentrated in one spot, making it much more comfortable to hold. It’s a small change, but the speaker hole symmetry is a welcome sight.Foundry The ultimate maturity Switching from an iPhone 16 Pro Max to a 17 Pro Max may not feel as alluring as upgrading from older models. The longer you wait between upgrades, the more noticeable the cumulative improvements become. Nevertheless, the iPhone 17 Pro Max still feels like a worthwhile step forward for me. The main iOS 26 features are identical, and my everyday experience remains largely the same. Yet with its refined cameras, fresh design, improved thermal management, and longer battery life, the iPhone now feels truly complete. My workflows haven’t changed, but the device itself has finally reached the pinnacle of reliability. Apple iPhone 17 Pro Max Read our review
