Apple Studios’ ‘F1 The Movie’ set to surpass $600 million in global ticket sales
Apple Original Films’ “F1 The Movie” was rereleased in select IMAX theaters beginning Friday, August 8, 2025, and expanded further into IMAX locations and large formats worldwide Friday, August 15th.
A thrilling box office showdown is unfolding as Warner Bros.’ “Superman” and Apple’s “F1 The Movie” vie to be the first to surpass $600 million in global ticket sales, Variety reports.
As of Sunday, August 17, 2025, “Superman,” directed by James Gunn, has grossed $595 million worldwide, including $340 million domestically, after six weeks in theaters. Meanwhile, “F1,” starring Brad Pitt, has earned $590 million globally, with a strong $407 million from international markets after eight weeks. Both films, not initially seen as guaranteed hits, have defied expectations with impressive performances.
“Superman,” featuring David Corenswet as the Man of Steel, added $3.1 million overseas and $8.4 million globally over the weekend. Despite its success, it’s unlikely to overtake 2013’s “Man of Steel” ($670 million), but its reception marks a “positive step forward for DC Studios,” which has faced challenges with recent comic book adaptations, according to Variety. The film’s performance signals a promising start for Gunn’s vision for the DC Universe, with upcoming projects like “Supergirl” and “Clayface” slated for 2026.
“F1,” a bold venture with a production budget exceeding $250 million, collected $9.3 million internationally and $12 million worldwide over the same weekend. The film, featuring Pitt as a retired Formula One driver, has become Apple’s highest-grossing theatrical release, surpassing Pitt’s previous career high, “World War Z” ($540 million). Its global stamina, particularly overseas, underscores its appeal as an original, adult-oriented blockbuster.
As both films approach the $600 million milestone, their success highlights the power of compelling storytelling and star-driven spectacles to draw audiences, even in a competitive market. The race is on!
MacDailyNews Take: “F1” is certainly paying off for Apple and we expect it’ll soon pay off for Apple TV+, too!
