This Week in Apple History

On August 7, 2006, Apple introduced the Mac Pro. The Mac Pro was part of the Intel rollout when Apple switched over from PowerPC chips. It replaced the Power Mac G5 as Apple’s top workstation.

The Mac Pro had two 64-bit, dual-core Intel Xeon 5100 Woodcrest CPUs. The base model has a pair of 2.66GHz CPUs, but you could upgrade it to two 3GHz CPUs.

It featured the same cheesegrater case as the Power Mac G5. Apple kept using this case until 2019.

In our review of the 2006 Mac Pro, we said it was “just about the best high-performance workstations money can buy,” but we also said that “the Mac Pro also arrives in a world of software that’s still in flux.” Developers were still working on switching their apps from PowerPC code to Intel, so many apps had to use Apple’ Rosetta emulation on the Mac Pro.

The Inbox

These are the reader, listener, and viewer comments we discussed on the show.

Apple Music

Jason posted a video about the new ability to pin items in Apple Music. This feature will be available in iOS 26. But of course, people have thoughts about the Music app.

How about Apple Music [lets] me search only my music instead of defaulting to their subscription service, which I don’t have.

I stopped using Apple Music and my legacy library there years ago. Still open the app randomly, but have moved on to services with more features. Sigh.

iPhone Fold

In episode 943, we talked about iPhone Fold rumors. One listener had a comment.

Why is it that all the Apple Podcasters out there think the iPhone Fold is not necessary or not significant? If I could carry an iPhone that would fold out to an iPad mini, I would be ecstatic! Apple should have brought this out years ago! Samsung will be in generation 8 by the time Apple’s foldable comes out and that is just inexcusable! Apple needs to get off its butt and stop being a follower and start being an innovation leader!
