The pros and cons of using Apple’s AirPods Pro as hearing aids

Since Apple enabled the ability to use AirPods Pro as a hearing aid, some wearers have found they can finally hear others speaking in a noisy restaurant, but other users think the white earbuds are too awkward to be full-time hearing aids.

Recently, we interviewed people who have tested the AirPods as hearing aids over the past several months, to see how they’re faring in the wild. What we learned is that their shortcomings have little to do with the hearing-assistance features. Our testers worried about the Pods staying in their ears, and said wearing them may come off as rude. Still, most agree that the Apple earbuds are a low-effort way for the uninitiated to try the experience of using hearing aids, and can even be a gateway to a professionally fit pair.
Tips from the testers
• Dig into settings: The AirPods’ menu only appears in settings when the earbuds are connected to your phone and in your ears. This is where you’ll find the Hearing Test. You can also make adjustments under Hearing Aid to the amplification and ambient noise reduction settings.
• Enable transparency mode: The AirPods have a noise-canceling feature that some people find blocks out too much noise, making conversation difficult. Turning on transparency mode will let you hear more external sounds.
• Experiment with the fit: AirPods Pro 2 come with four tips in different sizes. It might seem counterintuitive—but a smaller tip may hold the bud more securely in your ear.
