17% of iPhone buyers upgraded from an Android phone in Q224; up sharply YoY – CIRP

Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP) have long tracked loyalty and platform switching among iPhone customers. CIRP assesses the percentage of iPhone owners that upgrade from another iPhone, what percentage buy their first phone, and what percentage upgrade from Android to iOS.

In the June 2024 quarter, we saw the highest level of switching from Android to iOS among iPhone buyers that we’ve seen in the last several quarters.
In the June 2024 quarter, 17% of iPhone buyers previously owned an Android phone. This is a sharp increase from the June 2023 quarter, and the highest percentage of Android switcher iPhone buyers we’ve seen in the past five years.

Earlier we found that Apple sold a smaller percentage of current iPhone 15 base and Pro models in the June 2024 quarter compared to earlier quarters. This of course means older phones sold better, including iPhone 14 and 13 and even iPhone SE.
Of course, these older phones cost less and have less advanced features, and they turn out to be especially interesting for former Android owners. For first timers, any iPhone that brings new features and a new, novel operating system at a more competitive price is welcome.

MacDailyNews Take: Yes, Android settlers are notoriously cheap, but once they get a real iPhone, even if it’s last year’s model or even older, they won’t go back. And, when the time comes to upgrade that iPhone, they’ll more than likely opt to buy a current model for their second iPhone.
