Apple TV+ preps ad-supported tier

Monday July 29, 2024. 07:01 PM , from Mac Daily News
Apple has held talks with the UK’s TV ratings body in the latest sign that the company is planning to introduce an ad-supported tier to its critically acclaimed Apple TV+ streaming service. The Telegraph reports that executives met with a viewership data firm in recent weeks to discuss potential options for tracking ads on Apple TV+.
James Warrington for The Telegraph:

Barb, which is jointly owned by broadcasters including the BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and Sky, provides official viewing data for British TV.
It already monitors the time viewers spend watching Apple TV+, offering customers data for films and shows such as Ted Lasso and Severance.
However, the ratings agency would need to deploy additional data collection techniques to capture advertising.
It is the latest indication that Apple, which is the only major streaming service yet to introduce adverts, is planning to follow suit… Netflix, Disney and Amazon Prime have all introduced cheaper ad-supported tiers to their streaming platforms in recent months.
