Apple officially designated the iPhone X, first-generation AirPods, and original HomePod as “Vintage” products Tuesday, a classification that Cupertino includes prior to the products becoming “Obsolete” and no longer serviced.
Apple’s Vintage Products: Farewell (But Not Quite)
Apple categorizes products discontinued for sale between five and seven years ago as “vintage.” These items might still be eligible for repairs at Apple Stores or authorized service providers for up to two years, subject to parts availability. Eventually, they become “obsolete” (seven years after discontinuation), and Apple ceases service altogether.
Joining the Vintage Club:
iPhone X (Released: November 2017): Marking the iPhone’s 10th anniversary, the iPhone X signified a significant shift. It introduced a bezel-less 5.8-inch OLED display and Face ID, replacing the home button and Touch ID. Powered by the A11 Bionic chip and featuring wireless charging and a premium design, it even made headlines when a modified version with USB-C sold for a whopping $86,000 on eBay.
AirPods (1st generation) (Released: December 2016): These wireless earbuds, featuring the iconic white design and W1 chip for easy pairing, revolutionized the market. They boasted auto play/pause functionality and a charging case. Successors include AirPods 3 (with AirPods 4 rumored for 2024) and AirPods Pro 2.
HomePod (Released: February 2018): As Apple’s first smart speaker, the HomePod offered high-quality audio with a custom woofer and seven tweeters. Powered by an A8 chip, it integrated Siri for music, smart home control, and information services. While initially the sole option, the affordable HomePod mini arrived later. Although discontinued, Apple launched HomePod 2 in January 2023 with minor updates.
