EU bureaucrats demand to know why Apple terminated Epic Games’ developer account

Epic Games’ Fortnite violated Apple’s App Store guidelines
European Union bureaucrats are demanding to know why Apple terminated a new developer account created by Epic Games in Sweden in an attempt to return its Fortnite and other games on Apple devices via its own sideloading game store on Apple’s devices.
Reuters:

Epic Games sought to take advantage of landmark EU rules known as the Digital Markets Act (DMA) which kick in on Thursday and require Apple to open up its closed eco-system to rivals.
Apple blocked the effort, citing Epic’s past breaches of contract in the long-running legal dispute.
“We have requested further explanations on this from Apple under the DMA (Digital Markets Act),” a European Commission spokesperson said in an email.
Apple reiterated on Thursday that it exercised its rights which has been determined by courts.
“Epic’s egregious breach of its contractual obligations to Apple led courts to determine that Apple has the right to terminate ‘any or all of Epic Games’ wholly owned subsidiaries, affiliates, and/or other entities under Epic Games’ control at any time and at Apple’s sole discretion’,” an Apple spokesperson said.

MacDailyNews Take: Epic Games fscked around and found out.
In order to use Apple’s developer tools and services, or distribute software on Apple platforms, developers need to agree to adhere to Apple’s terms or face termination of their account(s).
Epic instead decided to play stupid games and win stupid prizes.
Epic Games clearly failed to adhere to Apple’s terms when it violated Apple’s App Store guidelines by offering up a way to bypass App Store In-App Payments in Fortnite. In fact and as such, and rightfully so, Epic Games’ developer account was terminated by Apple in 2020.

As for the EU bureaucrats who’re the world’s best at defecating red tape:
The European Union arose because the Europeans couldn’t compete on their own with the rest of the world, so they each lined up to surrender their national sovereignty, unique cultures, and dignity for an undemocratic, opaque, wasteful, bloated, bureaucratic quasi-governmental blob – and, even with the EU’s thumbs all over the scale, they still can’t compete. – MacDailyNews, March 4, 2024
