How To Slow Down or Speed Up Playback on YouTube Videos

If a YouTube video is too fast or too slow, you can change the playback speed in the video settings or using keyboard shortcuts. You can also easily jump back 10 seconds to see or hear something again.

Now if you're ever at YouTube and you're watching videos, say a tutorial, and it's a little too fast it is actually really easy to slow it down. It doesn't just change the speed of the video, it adjusts the audio accordingly as well. It can also, of course, pause the video and jump a little bit back in time if you if you need to hear something again.
So when you have a YouTube video like this and say it is playing and you want to slow it down one way to do it is to click the little settings button down here, it looks like a gear, you click that and then you can see the Playback speed. Click that and now you can adjust the speed and say set it to 75%. That will slow down the video. You'll see the number reflected there. To change it back just Click Settings again, go to Playback Speed, and set it back to normal.
Note that you can also click Custom and then set a variety of different speeds down to 5% intervals. So you can adjust it to slightly if you like. Then you can see it here listed as Custom. Then you switch back to Normal and go to Playback Speed you will find that the Custom Speed is there still there to choose later on. Of course you can use the same thing to speed videos up if the presenter is moving too slow or there's some video that you're just reviewing and you want to get through it a little quicker you can set the speed a little higher.
Now there is a keyboard shortcut for this as long as you're using YouTube and web browser on a computer like a Mac. You would use Shift and then the Comma and Period keys on US keyboards. So the comma, which also has the Less Than symbol will slow it down. The Period with the Shift Key will speed it up. So it is easy to slow down video for a portion, speed it back up to the normal rate, maybe make it go even faster for a while, and then bring it back down.
Now, of course, if you're watching the video and you just want to pause it for a second you can always use the Pause Button here and then click again to Play. The keyboard shortcut for that is k. Just use k to Pause and k to resume. Now to either side of k on US keyboard is j and l. If you use j it will jump back ten seconds and you can see that indicated there on the video. L will jump forward ten seconds. So it's easy if you miss something to just hit that once or twice really quickly to go back a little bit to rewatch a section.
Now using the YouTube app on the iPhone, of course you don't have those keyboard shortcuts. But you can still change the speed. So you can go into the Settings here and then you can see Playback Speed and set a different speed. So you do have the ability to adjust it. It's just not as easy. However, it is pretty easy to actually jump back in time. Just double-tap on the left side of the video and it will jump back ten seconds. Double-tap on the right side to go forward ten seconds. If you're using a web browser on your iPhone then you could do the same thing. You've got the Double-tap on either side and to change the speed you're going to do something similar. You're going to go to Settings here and then you're going to adjust the Playback speed a little differently than you do in the app.
Keep in mind that the buttons change on YouTube depending upon whether you're logged into your Goggle Account or not. So sometimes the Settings button appears as three dots and sometimes it appears as a gear in various different situations.
So if you find your YouTube video is going too fast or too slow for you it is easy to adjust the speed, jump back and forth in it, and pause and resume it as you like.
