Apple issues voluntary recall for 15-inch MacBook Pro units made between September 2015 and February 2017 due to potential battery overheating issue

It’s not the best news you’re going to hear all day, but at least there’s a replacement program for the issue.

Apple on Thursday announced a voluntary recall for owners of its 15-inch MacBook Pro notebooks sold between September 2015 and February 2017. The notebooks, as cited by Apple, feature a battery issue that presents a risk of overheating.

Apple has stated that it will replace the batteries in affected units for free.

To check if your MacBook Pro qualifies for the decal, click on the Apple menu, select “About This Mac” and if the description says “MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015),” take note of the serial number. Then go to Apple’s website and submit the serial number to see if your 15-inch MacBook Pro is part of the recall.

Qualifying 15-inch MacBook Pro notebooks can be taken to an Apple Authorized Service Provider, an Apple Retail Store location, or you can contact Apple support to arrange mail-in service. According to Apple’s support document regarding the issue, the repair could take up to two weeks to complete.
