Parts shortage leads to some Apple Watch Series 2 units being upgraded to Series 3 units after bringing them in for repairs

This may be the best news given a lackluster situation.

Until further notice, customers receiving repairs of the 38mm aluminum Apple Watch Series 2 will be fulfilled with equivalent Series 3 models due to a temporary shortage of unspecified parts, according to an internal document shared with Apple Stores and Apple Authorized Service Providers today. 

The internal document reminds technicians that series 3 units require an iPhone compatible with watchOS 4 or later. As such, Apple has instructed technicians to notify iPhone 5 and iPhone 5c customers of their option to upgrade their iPhone to resolve this incompatibility. 

The memo also stated that if a customer is unable to accept the substitute Series 3 unit, they can contact Apple support to request a refund.

Apple has offered similar Apple Watch repair substitutions in the past given parts shortages, which in turn provided some customers with upgrades to newer generations of the Apple Watch at a fraction of the cost of a new unit.

Customers can initiate a report by booking an appointment with the Apple Store web site or through an Apple Authorized Service Provider.

It’s unknown as to exactly when this policy will end, so you may or may not find yourself presented with this offer.
