Facebook ‘unintentionally uploaded’ email contacts of up to 1.5 million users

Thursday April 18, 2019. 09:28 PM , from Mac Daily News
“Facebook Inc said on Wednesday it may have ‘unintentionally uploaded’ email contacts of 1.5 million new users since May 2016, in what seems to be the latest privacy-related issue faced by the social media company,” Reuters reports.
“Business Insider had earlier reported that the social media company harvested email contacts of the users without their knowledge or consent when they opened their accounts,” Reuters reports. “When an email password was entered, a message popped up saying it was ‘importing’ contacts without asking for permission first, the report said.”
“Facebook has been hit by a number of privacy-related issues recently, including a glitch that exposed passwords of millions of users stored in readable format within its internal systems to its employees,” Reuters reports. “The company has also been facing criticism from lawmakers across the world for what has been seen by some as tricking people into giving personal data to Facebook and for the presence of hate speech and data portability on the platform.”

As we wrote last May, “If you trust Mark Zuckerberg to be the keeper of your photos, contacts, political views, religious beliefs, etc., you’re batshit insane.”
Instant messages sent by Mark Zuckerberg during Facebook’s early days, reported by Business Insider in May 2010:
Zuckerberg: Yeah so if you ever need info about anyone at Harvard
Zuckerberg: Just ask
Zuckerberg: I have over 4,000 emails, pictures, addresses, SNS
[Redacted Friend’s Name]: What? How’d you manage that one?
Zuckerberg: People just submitted it.
Zuckerberg: I don’t know why.
Zuckerberg: They “trust me”
Zuckerberg: Dumb fucks
