How Do I Paste an Icon On To a Folder?

I want to paste an icon on to a folder – my shortcuts folder, to see it more readily. I have tried opening my “Bookmarks” folder with control-info and dragging an icon into the the upper left corner to replace the plain blue icon, but this doesn’t work.
