Rumor: Apple testing next-gen iPhones with USB-C connectors, three-camera system, significant changes for iOS 13

Thursday January 31, 2019. 12:15 PM , from Power Page
The rumor mill has it that the next-gen iPhone could feature a rear-facing 3D camera incorporating a laser scanner for purposes like augmented reality, while iOS 13 could deliver features like Dark Mode and CarPlay enhancements.
The laser sensor is thought to work at ranges up to about 15 feet, in contrast with the dot projection system on current iPhones’ front-facing TrueDepth cameras. Apple is also said to be talking to Sony about testing components.
Unlike TrueDepth’s dot projection system, the new system centers around a time of flight (TOF) system, which measures the time it takes for pulses of light to travel to and from a target surface.

Apple was also said to be looking into a rear-facing 3D camera system for the 2019 iPhone models, but apparently decided to postpone. As such, the 2019 iPhones are rumored to include the largest of the three models released featuring a triple-lens rear camera.
The third lens, if incorporated, would not only allow for a wider field of view and more zoom options, but also the ability to repair an image to include a subject that was accidentally cut out.
The laser technology could actually make its first appearance on a 2020 iPad Pro shipping as soon as spring 2020, according to one source.
Apple is also rumored to be doubling the length of its Live Mode to six seconds as well as testing iPhone handsets with USB-C connectors as opposed to Lightning.
An updated “budget” iPad could meanwhile ship this spring, retaining Lightning and a roughly 10-inch screen while moving to a faster processor. Sources backed rumors that Apple is working on an updated iPad mini, a tablet line last updated in 2015.
Finally, Apple’s upcoming iOS 13 operating system is rumored to include a “Dark Mode” option as well as CarPlay upgrades. Other new features are thought to include a new home screen, file management improvements, and the ability to tab through several versions of a single app.
Stay tuned for additional details as they become available.
