Shortage of Apple Watch Series 1 42mm repair parts could allow users to qualify for newer models come February

Tuesday January 29, 2019. 12:15 PM , from Power Page
If you have an original Series 1 Apple Watch and it needs repairs, you might be able to finagle a newer model given the lack of parts on hand.
Repair parts are said to be temporarily constrained for 42mm models of the Apple Watch Series 1 and first-generation Apple Watch, nicknamed “Series 0”, per to an internal document distributed to Apple Authorized Service Providers on Monday.
Apple has permitted its Authorized Services Providers to offer a 42mm Apple Watch Series 2 as a substitute starting February through April according to the document.

The internal document makes no mention of the Series 2, Series 3, Series 4, or 38mm models, nor what specific criteria applies. It’s also unknown as to whether to parts constraint is applicable to the aluminum, stainless steel, or other finishes.
The document was distributed to Apple Authorized Service Providers in the United States and other countries, and it was likely sent to Apple Stores as well, in which case the Genius Bar would follow the same guidelines.
Stay tuned for additional details as they become available.
