Intel refutes claims that 10nm manufacturing production efforts have ended, cites progress, better chip yields

Tuesday October 23, 2018. 12:15 PM , from Power Page
Chipmaker Intel, responding to claims that it had ended development on its 10nm “Cannon Lake” processors, announced on Twitter that it is “making good progress” on its upcoming 10nm chips.
The tweet follows a claim stating that Intel had ended its 10nm manufacturing process. Intel’s 10nm processors were supposed to launch at some point in 2016, but have been delayed multiple times due to production difficulties.
Intel, in turn, has stated that its 10nm process is improving and “consistent with the timeline” the company shared during its last earnings report. The company cited improved ciphered yields and stated that, without additional delays, the chips will debut in 2019.

From its own end, Apple, which relies on Intel’s chips for its products, has experienced some delays given the hurdles Intel has run into. Apple is rumored to be transitioning away from Intel chips to its own custom-designed chips as soon as 2020 or 2021, using supplier TSMC as a manufacturer. This change could allow Apple to have more control over its design, see improved profits, and better differentiate its products from that of its competitors.
Apple won’t be ready to transition to its own chips by 2019, and will likely adopt the 10nm Cannon Lake chips from Intel provided those chips make their launch date. Cannon Lake chips will bring performance improvements, reduced power consumption, and support for faster, more efficient LPDDR4 RAM.
Stay tuned for additional details as they become available.
