Google Turns Any Headphones Into a Live Translator With Gemini

Google wants language barriers to feel a little less real. 

With help from its Gemini AI, the app is now rolling out live speech translation through headphones, along with smarter text translations and new tools for language learners.

Google says Translate is now better at understanding meaning, not just words. Using Gemini, the app can handle tricky phrases such as idioms, slang, and local expressions that often lose their meaning when translated literally.

According to Google, this update improves how Translate understands context, helping it deliver more natural, accurate results rather than word-for-word translations. The company says this is especially useful for phrases that don’t mean exactly what they say.

The improved text translation is rolling out now in the US and India, covering English and nearly 20 other languages, including Spanish, Hindi, Chinese, Japanese, and German. It’s available on Android, iOS, the web, and in Google Search.

Live translation comes to any headphones

The biggest buzz is the rollout of a beta experience for live speech-to-speech translation delivered directly to your headphones. No special, expensive hardware is required. Google confirms the feature works with “any pair of headphones.”

This new function, which supports more than 70 languages, is designed to capture the nuance of speech. The system works to “preserve the tone, emphasis and cadence of each speaker to create more natural translations,” according to Rose Yao, VP of Product for Search at Google. This means you can tune into a foreign-language conversation, lecture, or film and hear a translation into your preferred language almost instantly.

Android users in the US, Mexico, and India are the first to get the beta. After pairing their headphones, users can open the Translate app and tap “Live translate” to begin. Google says the feature will expand to iOS and more countries in 2026.

Language learning tools get an upgrade

Google is also expanding its language-learning features within Translate. Users will now get improved feedback when practicing speaking, along with a new streak feature that tracks how many days in a row they’ve practiced. 

Language practice is also expanding to nearly 20 more countries, including Germany, India, Sweden, and Taiwan. New practice options include English-to-German and English-to-Portuguese, as well as several languages — such as Bengali, Mandarin Chinese, Hindi, Italian, and Swedish — to English.

The company hopes that by providing “customized learning experiences that reflect real-life scenarios,” people will be able to make consistent progress on their language goals.
