Pentagon Deploys Google’s Gemini AI to 3 Million Workers

The Pentagon has selected Google’s Gemini AI platform to deliver productivity and automation tools to its 3 million civilian and military employees. 

Dubbed GenAI.mil, the new platform was initially greeted with suspicion by Pentagon employees when it appeared on their computers on Monday. An email from Secretary of War Pete Hegseth helped quell cybersecurity concerns and encouraged all staff to use it. 

“I am pleased to introduce GenAI.mil, a secure generative AI platform for every member of the Department of War,” Hegseth wrote in the email. “It is live today and available on the desktops of all military personnel, civilians and contractors. With this launch, we are taking a giant step toward mass AI adoption across the department. This tool marks the beginning of a new era, where every member of our workforce can be more efficient and impactful.”

GenAI.mil is the fruition of a $200 million contract brokered between the Department of Defense (DoW) and Google Cloud in July, when xAI, OpenAI and Anthropic also signed similar deals. 

Securing DoW AI use

Specifically designed for government use under the Gemini for Government brand, GenAI.mil is powered by Google Distributed Cloud, which allows the system to operate inside environments with strict data and security requirements.

The platform will run in a high-security DoW cloud environment approved for sensitive unclassified data, with safeguards that prevent department information from being used to train Google’s public models. 

DoW personnel can use GenAI.mil for unclassified work, including simplified onboarding, automation of repetitive administrative tasks, and accelerated contract workflows. Google said the environment delivers commercial scale, resilience and an enterprise-grade user experience, with a design that supports continuous updates so the department can integrate new models as they become available.

Our deep commitment to security, sovereign data protection, and the unique power of AI gives the DoW the ability to equip all of their personnel with modern tools to solve operational and productivity challenges with unprecedented speed.”

Scaling AI across government

GenAI.mil positions the DoW as one of the first federal agencies to put an enterprise AI system on every employee’s desktop, giving Google a central role in the department’s adoption of automated drafting, document processing, and contract management. The DoW confirmed the platform is designed to house other American-made “frontier AI models,” establishing a multi-vendor, interoperable foundation. 

This level of integration places commercial AI tools under even closer scrutiny from federal oversight bodies as agencies expand their dependence on vendor platforms for daily operations. 

The deployment raises familiar questions around access controls, data retention, and how sensitive information is handled and stored in cloud systems. Agencies that adopt generative AI at scale must demonstrate that models are contained, that prompts do not leak across environments, and that suppliers maintain clear boundaries between government activity and commercial research pipelines. 

The DoW says GenAI.mil addresses these issues through its design and operating environment, which will be monitored as usage increases. Hegseth emphasized that the AI itself tells users to double-check everything it provides, and he directed all personnel to “distrust and verify all outputs prior to use.”Outside government networks, Google rolls out Gemini 3 Deep Think to AI Ultra subscribers, showcasing its most advanced reasoning mode for complex math, science, and logic work.
