Microsoft blocks Windows 11 24H2 update on devices with known issues

Monday October 21, 2024. 05:29 PM , from PC World
Windows 11’s big annual 2024 update was supposed to be an exciting milestone for the operating system, but it is increasingly edging into debacle territory due to all the issues it’s been causing.

Problems stemming from the Windows 11 24H2 update include disappearing mouse cursors, SSD-related crashes, driver-related crashes, undeletable crash files, broken Clipboard History feature, and broken internet connections. Not to mention the update itself takes a long time to install and removes a bunch of features and apps.

Windows 11 24H2 update withheld from some devices with known issues

The latest issue, which was first recognized last Friday, is that the Windows 11 24H2 update may fail to install altogether on some Asus devices. Affected models include the X415KA and X515KA, which receive an error message and a blue screen instead of completing the update.

The cause is said to be incompatibilities with certain hardware. As a result, Microsoft has blocked delivery of the Windows 11 24H2 update for these devices and it isn’t yet known when exactly the update will be made available again for affected systems.

In addition to the Asus compatibility issue, the big 2024 update is also causing problems with the integrated cameras on some devices that use face or object recognition.

Although Microsoft hasn’t provided specific details on the nature of the problem, the Camera app, Windows Hello, and other applications are apparently affected. If your device is affected by this problem, you’ll find that the Windows 11 24H2 update is unavailable until further notice.

Last but not least, users of the Voicemeeter app are apparently running into blue screen crashes with a “MEMORY MANAGEMENT” error message displayed, which is due to an error with the current version of the Voicemeeter driver. Microsoft is working with the manufacturer on a solution for this, but is also withdrawing the update until then.

Is Windows 11 24H2 just one big problem?

Again, Windows 11 24H2 was supposed to be an important step for Microsoft, as the new version brings several important improvements to Windows 11. However, these ongoing problems have been a huge stain on what should’ve been a monumental Windows 11 update.

Microsoft currently recommends that you do not manually install the 24H2 update if your device is affected by one of these issues until a comprehensive patch is tested and delivered.

If you’ve already installed Windows 11 24H2 and you’re experiencing problems that are seriously hampering productivity and usability, you can try undoing the faulty Windows update with a rollback.
