Google Maps adds new Live View AI magic, shows breakfast places in the morning

Tuesday May 18, 2021. 09:28 PM , from The Inquirer
Google has announced a number of new helpful new features for the Google Maps app, which adds contextual information that changes depending on what it believes you need.

During the Google I/O keynote before Android 12 was announced, Google showed an expanded Live View AI mode that’s loaded with contextual information. For instance, the tech will show you the direction of the hotel you’re staying at in the real world, if the booking is associated with your Google account.

Users will be able to place their phone camera over a restaurant to see how busy it is, as well as showing their opening hours as well as customer reviews and photos. You can see the new features represented in the tweets from the Google Maps account below.

We’re making it easier to explore with Live View.Soon you’ll be able to access it right from the map to see helpful details about places nearby — like their busyness, reviews, photos, and more. #GoogleIO pic.twitter.com/V2g5Q8s7rR— Google Maps (@googlemaps) May 18, 2021

Later this year, Live View will show you: 1️⃣ Street labels to help you navigate complex intersections2️⃣ Places important to you like home, work, or your hotel #GoogleIO pic.twitter.com/PkF4pQ97ex— Google Maps (@googlemaps) May 18, 2021

Live View is also coming indoors, Google says, which will make it easier to find everything from the toilets to the ticket booth at your local train station.

Elsewhere, the Google Maps team also revealed adjustments to the traditional maps interface, which include more details like crosswalks or pedestrian islands.

Our most detailed street maps ever include sidewalks, crosswalks, and pedestrian islands to help you get around more easily. They’re coming to 50 new cities by the end of the year. #GoogleIO pic.twitter.com/HzeqXiWgwK— Google Maps (@googlemaps) May 18, 2021

The update also highlights places you may wish to see depending on the time of day, or whether you’re brand new to a city.

So, at eight in the morning, you might see the open breakfast establishments featured and at 5pm you’ll start seeing dinner places you might want to reserve. If Google Maps knows you’re in a place you’ve never or rarely visited, some of the more famous landmarks might show up within the map.

In the coming weeks you’ll see more relevant places when you open your map. We’ll show you coffee shops on weekday mornings, dinner restaurants in the evening, and tourist attractions when you’re traveling. #GoogleIO pic.twitter.com/qW2lLJnpWv— Google Maps (@googlemaps) May 18, 2021

Google is also building upon its expected busyness feature for restaurants, which has been a handy feature for those seeking a quiet place to eat during the pandemic.

Now Google is bringing this technology to entire areas or neighbourhoods, so it’s possible to know whether a landmark like Big Ben, for example, is likely to be busy and whether it might be a good idea to come back later.

You can already find out how busy a specific place is on Google Maps. Now we’re expanding it to neighborhoods to help you plan ahead. Area busyness is rolling out globally in the coming months. #GoogleIO pic.twitter.com/FScbRhkisj— Google Maps (@googlemaps) May 18, 2021

These features will all arrive within the Google Maps app later this year.
