In Brooklyn, New York today, on the sixth day of jury deliberations, a court convicted Mexican drug kingpin Joaquin 'El Chapo' Guzman.
Alan Feuer's incredible reporting on the case is essential reading.
It has been a dramatic trial indeed: tales of bribes, murders, naked lovers crawling into sewers, diamond-encrusted pistols... El Chapo smuggled drugs in fake cans of chile and bananas, through submarines and subterranean tunnels.
El Chapo routinely raped underage girls as young as 13 and 14, who were drugged and brought to him unconscious, according to testimony in the trial. He referred to the victims as his 'vitamins,' because raping them made him feel young and full of vitality again.
The dude's IT guy “had a nervous breakdown.”
