Meet Sonos Roam, the audio giant's most versatile speaker yet

Thursday March 4, 2021. 08:08 PM , from The Inquirer
The Sonos Roam is official and it’s the home audio giant’s most versatile and portable speaker yet. Look out UE Boom, the Sonos Roam is here!
The £159/$169 battery-powered speaker, which is much smaller than the Sonos Move, offers Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity, as well as support for Apple’s AirPlay 2, Amazon Alexa and the Google Assistant.
With an attractive 10-hours of continuous battery life (ten days when not in use), an IP67 waterproof and dust proof rating, while weighing under one pound (0.95 lbs), Sonos is definitely targeting mainstream on-the-go consumers.
The speaker is comprised of two Class-H amps, with a mid-woofer, one tweeter and a high-efficiency motor. There’s also support for Sonos’ automatic Trueplay tech, which adjusts to the listener’s environment, over Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. There’s also far-field microphones for those voice assistants.

Sonos says the pair of connectivity methods will automatically switch depending on where you roam. Naturally, if you’re on Wi-Fi, you can connect to any existing Sonos products in your home. It’s all compatible with the Sonos S2 app. Given the company’s track record, we have little doubt this’ll be a fixture among the best Bluetooth speakers moving forward.
Sonos says the Roam will be charged with a USB-C cable or a Qi wireless charger ($49), and there’s also an optional custom magnetic wireless charger in the offing. There’s also tactile buttons for controlling media and LED lights to indicate speaker status.

The design is a dinky 6.61 x 2.44 x 2.36-inches, meaning it’ll fit in most bags, handbags or summery fanny packs. It’s matte finish is available in shadow black and lunar white from April 20
The Sonos Roam will join the Sonos Move, which was the company’s first speaker designed for use away from the mains adapter. Calling it portable would be kind, given the 3kg weight. At £399 it costs way more than rival devices too.
The Roam will redress the balance somewhat with a speaker that can easily fit in the beach bag or picnic hamper at an affordable price point.
