Intel Tiger Lake: All you need to know about 11th Gen Intel Core processors

Monday January 11, 2021. 10:30 PM , from The Inquirer
11th Gen Intel Core desktop processors (code-named 'Rocket Lake-S') will deliver inceased performance and speeds. They will launch in the first quarter of 2021. (Credit: Intel Corporation)Intel has expanded its range of Tiger Lake (aka 11th Gen Intel Core) laptop processors to include the gaming-focussed H35 Series chips.
Intel Tiger Lake has established itself as one of the best mobile processor families for thin-and-light laptops since the latter-end of 2019, and so now Intel has decided its H-series gaming range could benefit from the same 10nm architecture.
While Intel’s H-Series mobile processors have previously been exclusive to large and cumbersome high-performance systems, Intel suggests the new H35 chips will be housed inside gaming portables as thin as 16mm. These gaming laptops won’t offer a high-end performance, but Intel suggests they’ll still be powerful enough to play the likes of Hitman 3 and Destiny 2 in 1080p with a 70+ frames-per-second performance.
The all-new Intel Core i7-11375H Special Edition will take the honour as the most powerful Tiger Lake processor available, made up of 4 cores and 8 threads with clock speeds up to 5Ghz.
The main new features for Intel Tiger Lake include:

Based on 10nm Willow Cove architecture
Up to 5GHz frequency speeds
Intel Xe graphics 2x more powerful than Ice Lake
Improved battery life
Thunderbolt 4 support
Integrated Wi-Fi 6
5G compatibility
Support for 8K HDR displays
Hardware-supported Dolby Vision

This is just a snapshot of all the features that Intel Tiger Lake is bringing to new laptops. For more details on the revolutionary new laptop chips, keep reading on.

Intel Tiger Lake release date
Intel’s Tiger Lake is already available in various new laptops, with the likes of Acer, Asus and Dell housing the chip in their flagship devices.
Microsoft is one of the few major laptop manufacturers yet to confirm that its ultrabooks will be upgraded to Tiger Lake, although it’s just a matter of time until the likes of the Surface Laptop 4 and Surface Pro 8 are officially confirmed.
The newly announced Tiger Lake H35 processors will expand the family to include ultra-portable gaming laptops, with the likes of Acer, Asus and MSI planning on launching such devices in the first half of 2021.
Intel has also confirmed that 8-core Tiger Lake processors will be arriving in the first quarter of 2021, which will be designed specifically for high-end content creation and gaming laptops.

Intel Tiger Lake specs – How powerful are they?
Intel’s Tiger Lake processors have a huge range of performance levels, from the Intel Core i7-11375H Special Edition that specialises in ultra-portable gaming laptops to the likes of the Intel Core i3-1110G4 which is reserved for low-power systems such as Chromebooks.
One element that all Tiger Lake processors currently have in common is that they’re designed for ultra-portable laptops. You won’t find a Dell XPS 17 or Razer Blade Pro 7 packing one of these chips for example.
The most powerful Tiger Lake processor only has 4 cores and 8 threads. In comparison, AMD’s Ryzen 7 4700G chip boasts 8 cores and 16 threads, which you’d assume would result in a superior multi-threaded performance. This emphasises the point that those chasing a high multi-core performance, which is useful for multitasking heavy workloads such as video editing, are better looking elsewhere. Intel’s upcoming 8-core 11th Generation H-Series processors will be a better option for such workloads.
The most exciting improvement for Tiger Lake is arguably the new Xe graphics though. Intel claims the new integrated graphics engine results in a 2x performance increase from the previous generation, allowing users to engage in light content creation and gaming without requiring a discrete graphics card.
While Ice Lake was only really capable of running eSports games such as Fortnite and Apex Legends, Intel suggests Tiger Lake can play the likes of Borderlands 3, Far Cry New Dawn and Hitman 2 in 1080p. You’ll probably need to tweak the graphics settings to make that possible, but such a prospect is still very exciting. Intel claims the gaming performance is better than what you’d expect from Nvidia’s MX350+ graphics card.
