Nintendo Switch 2 rumoured to support Nvidia's DLSS wizardry

A successor to Nintendo’s popular portable console is rumoured to launch this year, with the Nintendo Switch 2 (or Nintendo Switch Pro) expected to feature an OLED display, 4K performance in docked mode and support for Nvidia’s wicked DLSS technology. 
It’s currently unclear whether the rumoured Switch successor will be a straightforward sequel, or just a more premium model in the same vein as the PS4 Pro and Xbox One X. However, reports suggest it could launch in holiday 2021.

Nintendo Switch 2 release date – When is it coming out?
The Nintendo Switch 2 is tipped to launch in Holiday 2021, with it expected to become available just before Christmas.
However, there’s no confirmation from Nintendo right now so it’s always possible we’ll have to wait until 2022 for the Switch 2 instead.
Nintendo Switch 2 price – How much will it cost?
There has been no price confirmation just yet, but we can speculate. With the original Nintendo Switch priced at £279 and the Switch Lite costing £199, we expect a sequel to cost over £300. 
Bloomberg’s Intelligence’s Matthew Kanterman suggests the Switch 2 could be $100 more expensive than the vanilla Switch, as he said: “$349.99 will increase the value proposition of the device, but I still think Nintendo can drive strong demand even at $399.99.”
But any pricing predictions remain pure speculation at this point, so take any thoughts with a pinch of salt.

Nintendo Switch 2 specs – How powerful will it be?
The Nintendo Switch 2 is yet to be announced so there are no details on official specs. The current Switch runs on a version of the Nvidia Tegra X1 – so we’d expect to see an upgraded version of this.
Bloomberg reports that Nintendo plans to “adopt an upgraded Nvidia Corp. chip with better graphics and processing.” It’s also been reported that the Switch 2 will be capable of hitting 4K resolutions when docked and plugged into the TV, but could be restricted to a 720p resolution in portable mode.
Bloomberg also claims that the upcoming Switch will support Nvidia’s DLSS technology. Keeping the explanation simple, DLSS uses artificial intelligence and clever upscaling technology to boost the frame rate of a game without impacting the visual quality. DLSS is currently used by Nvidia’s high-end graphics cards such as the RTX 3090, RTX 3080 and RTX 3070 and has been very successful so far.
DLSS would make a lot of sense on a Nintendo Switch, as it could potentially make up the for limited hardware grunt by boosting the frame rate high enough to make 4K gaming possible.
Not much has been said about the battery efficiency of the Switch 2, with it likely being a major factor why the resolution in portable mode is capped to 720p. The reported OLED screen could help with battery life though.
Nintendo Switch 2 design and screen – What will it look like?
There haven’t been many rumours regarding the Switch 2 design so far, although it has been speculated that Nintendo will shrink down the bezel in order to increase the screen size.
It’s been widely suggested (mostly by Bloomberg) that the Switch 2 will feature an OLED display. This should improve the contrast of the Switch’s screen, while also allowing for deeper black colours. OLED technology can also increase the battery life, as individual pixels can be turned off when not required.
Despite the touted 4K performance in docked mode, the Switch 2 is expected to stick to a 720p screen resolution. Fans had hoped for an upgrade up to an 1080p display, but it looks like Nintendo is reluctant to make this move. We can understand this decision, as the Switch 2 would require a big performance boost to handle 1080p resolutions while battery life could also be affected.

Nintendo Switch 2 games – Have any titles been announced?
Given that a new Switch is yet to be announced, it is safe to say that no games have been revealed. However, we can speculate on what could be coming.
We already know a Breath of the Wild sequel is on the way, while Pokémon Legends: Arceus is set for a 2022 launch and looks like a perfect fit for an upgraded Switch console. 
We are yet to hear anything on a follow-up to fellow Nintendo success story Super Mario Odyssey. Odyssey was a long time coming but if a sequel is released early on in the life of the upcoming Switch then it will surely attract a lot of hype.
Nintendo has a wide breadth of games to look to that it could iterate on for a future console. There are plenty of games that are typically thought of as Nintendo titles that fans would be eager to see a sequel for. Along with these games, fans have remained hungry for the prospect of seeing their favourite console games ported over to the Switch and this could happen even more frequently with a more powerful Nintendo Switch 2.
