5 Types of Reverb Explained: Hall, Chamber, Room, Plate, and SpringThere is a plethora of reverb types available. Sweetwater discusses five common types of reverb and explores studio applications for each one.

Best Spring Reverb Pedals for Guitar

Spring reverb is the earliest incarnation of mechanical reverb used by guitarists. Initially employed in Hammond organs, spring reverb became a standard fixture of guitar combo amps in the early 1960s. Spring reverbs work by passing an audio signal through one or more springs and amplifying the vibrations. The sound of spring reverb is heavily associated with surf rock, but you can find its characteristic drip and splash all over popular music. Our selections include two real mechanical reverbs and two fantastic digital emulations.

Gamechanger Audio Light Pedal

The first spring reverb on this list, the Gamechanger Audio Light Pedal, is anything but conventional. The mad scientists at Gamechanger made sure of that by developing the world’s first optical spring reverb system. What is an optical spring reverb system? Well, it starts with an authentic spring reverb tank, but it adds an array of infrared optical sensors aimed at different points of the spring to provide a host of unique tones.

The Light Pedal allows you to blend harmonics, subharmonics, resonances, and overtones by selecting different combinations of the optical sensors. The resulting effects range from standard splash-and-drip spring sounds to harmonic tremolo-like warbles and gritty lo-fi delays. If you’re looking for a spring pedal capable of entirely new tones, then the Light Pedal is the one for you!

Danelectro Spring King

Like the Light Pedal, the Danelectro Spring King centers around a real, working spring reverb tank. But the Spring King is about as straight ahead as it gets with three simple controls: reverb, tone, and volume. Slap it in front of a tube amp, and you’ll be greeted with instant mojo. The Spring King includes a stompable footpad for creating epic tank-crash effects.

The Spring King can surf with the best of them, but it’s equally flattering for classic country and psychedelic rock ‘n’ roll. It can also double as a real analog studio effect to add dub-like textures to drums, vocals, and more!

J. Rockett Audio Designs Boing

The Boing spring reverb pedal from J. Rockett Audio Designs is the most stripped-back offering on this list. With a single knob, you can dial in luscious, dripping-wet spring reverb sounds inspired by the tanks found on vintage Deluxe Reverb amplifiers. Dialing in low amounts gives space and breadth to your guitar. Cranking the knob to the max drenches your guitar in a full-on surf wash. The J. Rockett Boing is a one-trick pony, for sure, but it’s very good at that trick!

Wampler Mini Faux

When pedalboard real estate is at a premium, the Mini Faux spring reverb pedal is a solid pick. This miniature-size pedal is packed with opulent spring reverb tones. It offers up to 2.8 seconds of decay time, which you can decrease using the depth control. A tone control allows you to darken or brighten the sound of the reverb without affecting your core tone. We’ve found that darkening the reverb tone can help your guitar snug into a mix while brightening the reverb is perfect for sprinkling some additional chime on clean, strummed chords. To our ears, the Mini Faux is the most modern-sounding spring unit on this list, making it an excellent choice for contemporary pop, rock, and country.

Best Room, Hall & Plate Reverbs for Guitar

Room, hall, and plate reverb generally provide a more natural ambience than spring reverbs. The pedals on our list take their cues from the digital emulations of these physical effects that have been the staple of home recording studios since the late 1970s and early 1980s. Room reverb imbues your guitar tone with a subtle sense of space, while hall and plate reverb can transform a basic guitar sound into an epic one. Often, digital reverb pedals will combine room, hall, and plate reverbs into a single unit, but that’s not always the case as you’ll see below.

T-Rex Creamer

The T-Rex Creamer puts three exceptional-sounding reverbs at your feet: spring, room, and hall. We’ve found this unit’s room and hall settings are fantastic; both are crisp and clear with a natural character. The simple control set — reverb, decay, and tone — will appeal to players who want a solid reverb sound with minimal fuss.

Like all T-Rex pedals, the Creamer is manufactured using some of the best components in the industry, including film/foil electrolytic capacitors, lifetime-use pots, and a rugged footswitch, toggle, and connectors. Plus, it passes your guitar’s dry signal through 100% analog circuitry to keep your core tone intact.

JHS 3 Series Hall Reverb

Josh Scott and the folks at JHS developed the 3 Series to provide guitarists with high-quality, no-frills effects at an affordable price. The 3 Series Hall Reverb is a knockout digital hall reverb ideal for modern guitar sounds. As its name indicates, the 3 Series Hall Reverb has three controls: verb, dampen, and decay. But it also includes a toggle switch to activate a modulator. The modulator affects the reverb tails, imparting a subtle movement that really brings the reverb to life.

Keeley Omni Reverb

Like the Creamer, the Keeley Omni Reverb equips you with three verbs — this time spring, room, and plate — in a single stomp. The room reverb is confoundingly realistic, and, with the dwell control, you can take it from a tight wooden room to a trashy garage space in a flash. Drawing inspiration from the famed EMT 140, the Omni Reverb’s plate algorithm is full-bodied with a sparkling high-end shimmer that flatters clean and driven tones.

TC Electronic Hall of Fame 2

Year after year, the TC Electronic Hall of Fame is one of Sweetwater’s best-selling reverb pedals — for good reason! The latest iteration of the HoF — the Hall of Fame 2 — is a value-packed monster with a stunning selection of room, hall, and plate verbs right out of the box.

What’s more, the Hall of Fame 2 includes three TonePrint slots to load in custom effects. Even cooler than that, you can beam new TonePrints through your guitar’s pickups into the pedal by using the free TonePrint mobile app! Finally, you can use the pedal’s pressure-sensitive “Mash” footswitch like an expression pedal to manipulate reverb parameters in real time.

Best Ambient Reverb Pedals for Guitar

Ambient and experimental guitarists rely on reverb to create their dreamlike guitar sounds, and they’ll frequently misuse reverbs, stack reverbs, or combine them with modulation or delay to come up with never-before-heard sounds. The reverbs we’ve chosen for this list follow that ethos, delivering reverb effects that are anything but standard. For purveyors of shoegaze, dream pop, and other ambient styles of music, these pedals can give you a jump start on crafting evocative, atmospheric tones.

Walrus Audio Slötva

The Walrus Audio Slötva is an updated version of their popular Slo pedal. The Slötva expands on the previous iteration’s functionality by providing three user preset slots to recall your favorite settings instantly. This ambient reverb works around three reverb modes — dark, rise, and dream — that, when used with the control knobs, can conjure up a nearly limitless palette of effects.

Momentary switching enables you to generate brief bursts of effects to highlight specific musical phrases, and a modulation section with three available waveshapes contributes additional texture to the sound. To top it off, this true-bypass pedal features a trails mode for smoother transitions when you disengage the effect.

Red Panda Context 2

Boutique pedal maker Red Panda focuses on creating unique effects for experimental guitarists. Based on rack units from the 1980s and early 1990s, the Red Panda Context 2 is primed for ambient guitar excursions. From bread-and-butter effects like hall and cathedral to oddball gated and glitch algorithms, the Context 2 comes loaded with eight distinctive reverb types. But these are just starting points to customize your sounds.

Speaking of customization, the Context 2 uses a web-based app to tweak and store presets, which you load into the pedal via the unit’s USB port. Be warned: this pedal runs deep! But, if you’re a fearless tone tweaker, it’s right up your alley.

EarthQuaker Devices Afterneath V3

EarthQuaker Devices is another company specializing in distinctive effects for sonic pioneers, and the Afterneath V3 is one of their most popular ambient pedals. The Afterneath V3 uses a swarm of short delays to create its reverb effects coupled with a unique drag control that operates in nine different modes. The drag modes are the real selling point of the Afterneath V3, and they create otherworldly pitch-bending effects that you can quantize to several musical scales.

Meris Mercury7

The Meris Mercury7 pays homage to the world-famous digital reverb unit that powered Vangelis’s iconic Blade Runner score. This ambient reverb pedal features stunningly accurate re-creations of two of the original unit’s most revered algorithms and a premium JFET input section for impeccable tonal integrity.

Dynamic pitched reverbs, an auto-swell function, and high- and low-frequency dampening combine to offer musicians an endless sonic playground. The Mercury7 boasts enhanced MIDI capability for preset switching, tap tempo, and expression control. And it’s all housed in a rugged and attractive brushed-aluminum housing.

Best Multi-reverb Pedals for Guitar

There’s something appealing about pedals that do just one thing (or a small handful!). However, sometimes you want a pedal that can do it all, especially when talking reverbs. Multi-reverb pedals are all about options, and the four we’ve chosen for this list supply you with plenty of them. Whether you’re looking for tried-and-true reverb effects or cutting-edge algorithms, we’re sure you’ll find a lot to love in these spectacular multi-reverb pedals.

Strymon BigSky

Since its release in 2010, the Strymon BigSky has been a pedalboard favorite of verb-obsessed guitarists. It’s also found its way into numerous synth rigs and is often employed as an outboard processor by top mix engineers. This comprehensive multi-reverb pedal features 12 classic reverb algorithms and offers deep editing functionality.

Editing from the front panel is doable, but you’ll want to download the free Strymon Nixie preset editor and library app to get the most out of the machine. With it, you can make and store custom patches (330 of which can be stored on the unit) and tap into the Strymon community to explore other users’ presets. Strymon has continuously improved the BigSky via firmware updates, and it hosts a powerful I/O configuration with an assignable expression-pedal input and robust MIDI implementation.

Electro-Harmonix Oceans 11

The Electro-Harmonix Oceans 11 hits a sweet spot of versatility and utility. This standard-size pedal delivers 11 iconic reverb sounds, each with variations accessible by the mode switch. You can customize the reverbs by using the secondary knob mode to get your desired sound. Moreover, a unique spring reverb preset allows you to “crash” the unit by double tapping the footswitch. If pedalboard space is limited but you need a fully featured multi-reverb, then the Oceans 11 from Electro-Harmonix is a standout choice!

Universal Audio UAFX Golden Reverberator

Universal Audio is widely revered for its dead-on accurate software emulations of legendary studio hardware. Now, you can enjoy these popular effects right from your pedalboard! The UAFX Golden Reverberator includes the Spring 65, Plate 140, and Hall 224 presets, each modeled after a famous piece of outboard gear. The pedal operates in mono, multi-mono, and true stereo modes, and it pairs with a free control app for mobile devices to manage the pedal’s settings.

But it doesn’t stop there! With the app, you can upload even more emulations of classic reverb effects, including the Plate 224 and Chamber 224 plates that come free with purchase. The UAFX isn’t as tweakable as the Strymon BigSky or Empress Reverb, but what it lacks in customization it more than makes up for in sound!

Empress Reverb

The Empress Reverb, like the BigSky, is beloved by synth players as much as guitarists. That’s due to its incredible amount of customization. With the Empress Reverb, you start with one of its whopping 32 reverb algorithms, which range from standard halls, plates, and shimmers to haunting ambient verbs. From there, the only limit is your imagination! It also includes tap tempo and infinite-hold options and allows for onboard storage of 35 custom presets.

If that wasn’t enough, then the Empress Reverb features a built-in cab simulator with three modes, which is ideal for silent stage setups and late-night recording sessions. We’ve found that the interface is relatively intuitive, but it does require a little effort to get the most out of the pedal’s bottomless feature set.
