Audient interface hardware inserts

I've had an audient id22 interface for a few years for my home mixing setup, and found it very annoying how it's seemingly impossible to use it with Pro Tools hardware inserts, as outputs 1/2 are the only ones you can use with the volume knob/mono/phase buttons, so you have to send out of 3/4 and in on 1/2. Of course, PT only allows HW inserts on corresponding inputs/outputs.
Today I finally figured out a way to do it, so thought I'd post here in case it's useful to anyone else
I installed loopback, and used that to create a device with 2 inputs and 0 outputs, then created a pro tools aggregate device, in audio/midi setup.
I added loopback first, then the audient, which offset the audient inputs from 1/2 to 3/4. This then works, allowing me to have the HW insert working properly.
