Spitfire Audio releases HAINBACH — LANDFILL TOTEMS

Thursday April 8, 2021. 07:14 PM , from Gearslutz
One-of-a-kind electronics from a true sonic innovator

"There's something really special about the sounds made from test equipment which i absolutely adore — making music out of something not designed for making music."

— Hainbach

Spitfire Audio’s latest release with SA Recordings comes from electronic innovator, composer and sonic mastermind, Hainbach — featuring his mind-blowing new concept album, Landfill Totems, and a sample library of the same name which comprises an extension of the highly unique sound palette of the record.

This exciting new venture distils many elements of Hainbach’s work into an immaculate project; an irrepressible childlike fascination and obsession for experimenting, a mischievous sense of humour and a truly innovative approach to electronic production and composition. Discover a truly unique world of cutting-edge, complex sounds, expertly curated by the artist from long-forgotten, now-obsolete, test equipment collected from nuclear research labs, grandfathers’ sheds and scrap heaps. These machines have been completely repurposed and given a new lease of life in an unforeseen capacity as instruments, producing unpredictable sounds from another world — eerie morse code bleeps and comms signals to flickering bass pulses; deep drones and ominous pads to grainy textural rhythms, visceral clicks, industrial drum hits and loops, electromagnetic noise to heavenly humanoid ‘voices’.

“Just press one note, and you get a whole spectrum of emotion.”

— Hainbach

Meticulously recorded and processed further, these dystopian sounds are presented in Spitfire Audio’s award-winning, easy-to-use plug-in, giving you access to truly one-of-a-kind, bespoke sounds, impossible to recreate. The sample library offers a world of sonic possibilities far beyond its original analog state, with many of the sounds morphing and evolving as you play, as well as a wide range of in-built controls and effects to drastically manipulate each of the presets. Designed to inspire and enrich your own music – whether you’re writing techno, ambient music or a cutting-edge film score — this inspiring plug-in enables you to create high-contrast atmospheres of suspense, tension and beauty. It’s a library you can really get lost in — and it’s a ton of fun.

LIVING MACHINES

“Each tower of equipment took the form of a lifelike statue, and suddenly all these faces started appearing in the machines... They made massive sounds and unfamiliar noises and I thought, I want these to be heard — I want these to sing again.”

– Hainbach

The Landfill Totems project started life as a performance installation at PNDT Gallery, expanding exponentially into a full album and an accompanying sound library, recorded at Patch Point Studios, Berlin. When observing these anthropomorphic figures, a deep appreciation and affection for the engineering technology of the past is apparent; totally unique machines assembled for one final swan song. Stacked into three monolithic towers resembling totem poles, each piece of equipment was chosen for its distinctive tone generation and modulation abilities — wired together much like a modular synthesiser.

Upcycled and redesigned as pillars and shrines, these totems act as a commentary on the environmental cost of progress; what was once the pinnacle of technology quickly becomes unviable and destined for the scrapheap, if not for the intervention of Hainbach — creating beauty from that which is thought to be obsolete. Among his collection is medical, telecommunication and scientific research equipment, vintage sound-testing devices, a Nuclear Instrumentation Modular, an outmoded medical signal generator and a mixer previously used by the Stasi, the state security service in former East Germany, and a Brüel & Kjaer 1613 Bandpass filter creating the hi-hat, bass drum and watery sounds.

SPITFIRE AUDIO X SA RECORDINGS

The Landfill Totems sample library has been made in conjunction with Hainbach’s album of the same name, out now on SA Recordings — the London label owned by Spitfire Audio, dedicated to supporting music created by contemporary composers and sound artists. This concept is an invitation for musicians and producers to reimagine, recreate or completely pull apart the sound world of an artist to facilitate their own vision.

The music Hainbach coaxes out of these ‘landfill totems’ is stark, minimalistic and full of impending doom — it is about a world in crisis, driven by indecision, division and losing its function; a reflection of the global circumstances in which it was created.

Out now on SA Recordings, the LP is available to buy on its own, as a digital bundle (digital download + sample library) or physical bundle (vinyl pre-order, digital download, sample library + complimentary limited edition cassette tape) via the SA Recordings website.
