Looking For Collector Vinyls? Four Genres To Explore

Friday January 15, 2021. 03:50 AM , from Music Think Tank
Collecting vinyl records can be a fun and rewarding hobby. Once you get into it, though, you’ll find that it makes sense to build your collection in specific genres. Some genres, though, are more fun and challenging to collect in than others. Here are four of the genres you may want to explore as a vinyl collector.
Heavy Metal
Thanks to the proliferation of heavy metal bands in Europe and the United States during the late 1970s and 1980s, there is an enormous opportunity for vinyl collectors in the metal genre. Many bands, particularly European ones, remained somewhat obscure and produced relatively few pressings of their records. As a result, it can be a fun challenge to track down vinyl from these lesser-known bands.
Comedy Records
At one time, vinyl records were used to distribute more than just music. Comedy albums were popular in the 1960s and 1970s and were often the way people found out about new comedic talents. These records can be quite hard to come by today, but they’re great for collectors looking to branch out into something new. If you’re old enough to remember some of the classic comedy acts of this period, you’ll also be able to enjoy the nostalgia that comes with revisiting great comedic entertainers.
Movie Soundtracks
Before CDs came about, motion picture studios were still releasing movie soundtracks in vinyl format. Among the most sought-after categories in this genre are horror vinyl collections. This is because horror movies often feature iconic soundtracks that stick with viewers. Horror movie collectors also treasure these vinyl records, so they are in demand from two different groups of avid collectors.
Jazz
Classic jazz vinyls are some of the most prized records out there. With several different sub-genres and a huge number of artists, jazz represents its own world within the musical landscape. As a result, this genre represents an almost endless opportunity for vinyl record collectors. From great jazz artists to obscure figures with limited pressings, you’ll find that jazz can keep your collection growing for a lifetime.
Needless to say, there are many other genres vinyl collectors may choose to focus on. In the end, it’s important to pick the genres you like most and center your collection around them. Whether you’re a metalhead or a jazz aficionado, though, you’ll find that there are years of enjoyment to be had building and listening to a vinyl record collection.
