Prince, Piano and Controversy at Super Bowl LII

Tuesday February 6, 2018. 03:18 AM , from Keyboard Magazine
When Justin Timberlake covered Prince's 'I Would Die 4 U' at last night's Super Bowl halftime show, more than just memories were stirred-up.Seated at a grand piano, Timberlake performed a duet with a video of the late singer. But many fans couldn't help but remember how fervently opposed to such technological trickery the Purple One once was.In a 1998 interview with Guitar World magazine, Prince responded to the possibility of performing with deceased artists. 'That's the most demonic thing imaginable,' he said. 'Everything is as it is, and it should be. If I was meant to jam with Duke Ellington, we would have lived in the same age. That whole virtual reality thing... it really is demonic. And I am not a demon. Also, what they did with that Beatles song ['Free As a Bird'], manipulating John Lennon's voice to have him singing from across the grave... that'll never happen to me. To prevent that kind of thing from happening is another reason why I want artistic control.'What do you think of Timberlake's tribute? Watch it starting at 8:57 in the video below.
