2018 NAMM Picks - Day 4

Tuesday January 30, 2018. 08:49 AM , from Keyboard Magazine
Five favorites from the last day of the 2018 Winter NAMM show.1. Vox ContinentalIn the Korg booth, this orange beauty immediately caught our eye. This Vox Continental reissue looks and sounds great! The vintage look and colors combined with modern digital technology makes for a full-bodied instrument. Not everyone needs a dedicated Vox organ, but if you do, prepare to be stoked.2. Waldorf Quantum I literally could not get a picture of this keyboard without someone’s hands on it, which should tell you something about its desirability. This 8-voice digital/analog hybrid synth is one of Waldorf’s best yet, and guaranteed to command your attention.3. Yamaha MontageWe watched legendary keyboardist Ronnie Foster cycling through sounds and jamming on Yamaha's flagship stage synth. The sound banks on the Montage are deep, as its merging of both the DX and Motif product lines. Add in Yamaha's new Motion Control Synthesis Engine and Super Knob, and you’ve got a powerful instrument capable of just about anything.4. Eventide Euro DDL Rack DelayWho says pedals are only for guitarists? Eventide has put out some amazing offerings like Space and TimeFactor, but this new modular delay is particularly intriguing. Plus, who couldn’t use a little delay on their synth patches?5. Kawai Shigeru SK-EX 9’1” Grand PianoWe tested every single concert grand we could get our hands on, as well as some dynamite uprights and baby grands. There were many stellar pianos at this year's NAMM show, but the Shigeru Kawai nabbed our 'Best in Show.' It had a rich bass, coupled with a sparkling (yet never shrill) top. Expressive and fluid, it's a dynamite piano for all styles of music.
